Job Description

Package Description:

To start September 2027

Salary £45,000-£60,000 per annum (depending upon experience)

We are seeking a dedicated, enthusiastic and inspirational individual to join our team as Head of Psychology. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to establish and develop a new department within a highly successful, specialist STEM college. Initially, the successful candidate will be the sole teacher of Psychology, with the potential to grow the department over time as student interest and demand develop.

We are particularly keen to appoint an individual who will bring a rigorous, scientific approach to the teaching of Psychology, building on our students’ exceptional mathematical abilities and exploring the many connections with other disciplines, particularly Biology, neuroscience and Economics. The successful candidate will have the freedom to shape the character and direction of the subject, establishing an intellectually ambitious curriculum that reflects the distinctive ethos of the College.

Our students are highly aspirational, intellectually curious and enthusiastic about opportunities to expand their learning beyond the A-Level curriculum. We would expect the Head of Psychology to foster this enthusiasm through a rich programme of academic enrichment, including independent research, projects and competitions.

Please see our application pack for the job description and person specification for this role.

Closing date: 12 noon – Friday 13th November

The National Mathematics and Science College

The National Mathematics and Science College (NatMatSci) is the top specialist STEM college in the UK regularly appearing in the top 10 schools by A-level results. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects are more important today than they have ever been. For those students looking to excel in these areas, the specialist education we provide is designed to enable them to thrive both at A-level and beyond. We recognise that a high-quality specialist education must go beyond the narrow confines of the curriculum and must expose our students to the breadth and joy contained within these subject areas in an integrated way. We are geared to help students learn how to think, not what to think, which will allow them to thrive at College, at the best Universities and beyond.

In September 2027, we will be offering a 2-year specialist STEM GCSE programme. This is a specifically designed 2-year GCSE course focusing on STEM subjects (Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Computer Science and English) augmented by our in-house intersections programme which explores the arts and humanities through the lens of STEM.

Academic Highlights

  • In 2026, 72% of A Level grades were awarded A*/A and 44% the highest A* grade.
  • Students leave the College to study at the best universities in the UK and overseas. Since we opened, every student has gained offers from Russell Group universities. Almost half our students have gone onto study at G5 universities (Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Imperial and LSE) with 1 in 4 students last year going to Oxford or Cambridge.
  • Lots of success in various national and international STEM competitions and olympiads, with at least one student a year representing the UK or their home country in an international Olympiad.

Alongside our academic focus, NatMatSci is known for excellent pastoral care and a warm, supportive community. With most students boarding, the College offers a structured environment in which students learn to live and work well together, develop independence, and build strong friendships. Our genuinely international community — with students representing over 30 nationalities — enriches daily life both in and out of the classroom, broadening perspectives and creating a vibrant, inclusive culture where students support one another and thrive. This means students leave us not only with the academic credentials required to access top universities around the world, but also with the social and soft skills necessary to thrive when they get there.
