We are seeking a dedicated SEND Science Teacher to join a specialist provision in Somerset supporting pupils across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This role is ideal for a Science Teacher with experience in SEND who is passionate about helping young people re-engage with learning.

As a SEND Science Teacher, you will deliver adapted and meaningful science lessons that support pupils’ academic progress while also promoting emotional regulation, confidence and positive behaviour within a structured, nurturing environment.

The Setting

This specialist SEND provision supports pupils in KS3 and KS4 who have experienced barriers to mainstream education. Many learners present with SEMH needs, autism and additional learning difficulties. The setting offers small class sizes, high staff-to-pupil ratios, and a strong emphasis on relationships, routine and emotional wellbeing.

The environment enables each SEND Science Teacher to provide individualised learning pathways, supporting pupils to build independence, resilience and sustained engagement through practical, accessible science education.

The Role

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the SEND Science Teacher will be supported by experienced teaching assistants and specialist professionals. The role balances academic learning with emotional and behavioural development, recognising that readiness to learn is key to progress.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Planning and delivering differentiated science lessons for KS3 and KS4 pupils with SEMH and ASD
  • Adapting curriculum content to meet a wide range of cognitive, emotional and behavioural needs
  • Creating a calm, predictable and structured classroom environment
  • Supporting pupils with emotional regulation, positive behaviour and self-esteem
  • Using practical, sensory and visual strategies to maximise engagement in science
  • Working closely with teaching assistants, therapists and SEN professionals
  • Contributing to EHCP targets, progress reviews and individual learning plans
  • Promoting independence, communication and life skills alongside subject knowledge

The Successful SEND Science Teacher Will Have:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS / ECT / NQT)
  • Experience working with KS3 and/or KS4 pupils with SEND, particularly SEMH and ASD
  • A strong understanding of trauma-informed practice and SEND teaching strategies
  • A calm, consistent and relational approach to learning and behaviour
  • A commitment to supporting pupils’ academic, emotional and social development
