We are looking for PMLD Teachers or PMLD Support Professionals to work with children and young people with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD) who are currently on a waiting list for specialist school placement. The purpose of this role is to ensure students remain engaged in meaningful education, learning, and communication while awaiting an appropriate school placement. Provision may take place in the home, community setting, or alternative education space.
Who would suit this role?
- A qualified Teacher with PMLD experience
- A HLTA or experienced SEN Support Staff with PMLD experience
- A Support Worker with strong PMLD experience who is confident leading structured learning sessions using Makaton
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver individualised, meaningful learning activities appropriate for students with PMLD
- Lead or support sessions focused on communication, sensory learning, engagement, and life skills
- Use Makaton consistently to support communication and understanding
- Work closely with families, professionals, and the wider support team
- Maintain a calm, safe, and nurturing learning environment
- Keep basic records of engagement and progress
Essential Requirements
- Proven experience working with students with PMLD
- Strong understanding of communication needs and sensory-based learning
- Ability to lead sessions independently (for support workers and HLTAs)
- Competence in using Makaton (formal qualification desirable but not essential)
- Patience, empathy, and a person-centred approach
- Commitment to safeguarding and inclusive education
Desirable (but not essential)
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
- HLTA qualification
- Experience delivering education outside of a traditional school setting
- Knowledge of EHCPs and multi-agency working
