Are you a passionate and resilient English Teacher looking to make a lasting impact on the lives of young people? Do you believe that positive relationships are just as important as outstanding teaching?

TeacherActive is working with a welcoming and supportive SEMH school in Colchester that is looking to appoint a dedicated SEMH English Teacher to join their committed team. This is an exciting opportunity for a Qualified Teacher (QTS) who is passionate about supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Whether you already have experience in an SEMH setting or have worked with pupils with challenging behaviour in a mainstream environment, we'd love to hear from you.

About the Role

As an SEMH English Teacher, you will deliver engaging and differentiated English lessons to pupils who require additional emotional and behavioural support. You will build strong, trusting relationships with your students, helping them overcome barriers to learning while developing their confidence, literacy skills, and love of English.

Working alongside Learning Support Assistants, pastoral teams, and senior leaders, you will create a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment where every pupil has the opportunity to succeed.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging English lessons to pupils with SEMH needs.
  • Differentiating learning to meet individual abilities and EHCP targets.
  • Promote positive behaviour using restorative and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Build positive relationships that encourage confidence, resilience, and engagement.
  • Monitor, assess, and record pupil progress, adapting teaching strategies where required.
  • Work collaboratively with support staff, parents, carers, and external professionals.
  • Contribute to creating a safe, inclusive, and nurturing school environment.

What We're Looking For

  • Experience teaching English at KS3 and KS4.
  • Experience working with pupils with SEMH, SEND, or challenging behaviour is highly desirable.
  • Excellent classroom and behaviour management skills.
  • A patient, resilient, and empathetic approach.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people to achieve their full potential.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practice or restorative approaches would be advantageous.

Our staff are paid on a PAYE basis, so you can rest assured you're paying the correct level of Tax and National Insurance, with no hidden admin charges or umbrella deductions from your hard-earned pay.

Safeguarding and DBS Compliance: Registration may involve an enhanced DBS check, ID checks and the supply of good professional references, depending on the role. We are committed to safeguarding and compliance across all placements.
