A well-established SME housebuilder based in the Reading area is looking for a Technical Manager to lead their technical function.

This is a business where you'll have real visibility over projects and genuine influence, rather than being one small part of a much bigger corporate structure.

You'll take the lead on architectural and building design matters across the company's live and upcoming sites, house types, layouts, specification, and Building Regulations compliance while working closely with the civils/infrastructure side of the technical team.

It's a hands-on role suited to someone with a strong architectural background who's comfortable enough with civils to coordinate effectively, without needing to be a specialist in that area.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead technical delivery of above-ground design across the company's portfolio of live and upcoming sites, house types, elevations, specification, and general arrangement drawings.
  • Manage the appointment and performance of external consultants, particularly architects, and coordinate with structural, civils, and drainage consultants as needed.
  • Ensure all above-ground design complies with NHBC Standards, current Building Regulations, and Building Safety requirements.
  • Input into planning applications and the discharge of planning conditions relating to design and technical matters.
  • Work closely with the civils/engineering side of the business to ensure infrastructure and above-ground design are properly coordinated, including basic input on drainage, levels, and site constraints.
  • Support Section Agreement processes (S38, S104, S278) where they interact with site layout and design.
  • Act as a key technical point of contact for Local Planning Authorities and Building Control.
  • Provide technical support to site teams, resolving design-related issues as they arise.
  • Report into senior leadership on technical risk, programme, and cost across the business

What We're Looking For

  • Proven experience in a Technical Manager or senior technical role within residential housebuilding, with a strong above-ground/architectural design focus.
  • Solid working knowledge of house type design, specification, and Building Regulations.
  • A working understanding of civils and infrastructure principles, drainage, levels, adoptable works, enough to coordinate effectively with engineers, even if not a specialist.
  • Comfortable working within a smaller, hands-on SME environment.
  • Confident stakeholder manager, used to dealing directly with LPAs and Building Control.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • What's On Offer
  • Upto £80,000 salary
  • Genuine autonomy and influence over the technical department's direction.
  • A close-knit, stable business with a strong local reputation.
  • Pension and benefits package.
  • A role with real variety, spanning design leadership and cross-team coordination with civils and engineering.
