Role Overview
Seeking an experienced Data Governance & BigQuery Consultant to define and implement a pragmatic data governance framework across its Google Cloud data platform.
The consultant will work closely with business stakeholders, data owners, IT, security and compliance teams to establish data access policies, governance controls and operating processes that enable secure self-service analytics while maintaining regulatory and organizational compliance.
The role combines strategy, governance design and hands-on implementation of access management controls within the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and BigQuery ecosystem.
Your responsibilities:
Governance & Policy Development
Assess the current BigQuery and GCP data landscape.
Define enterprise data access and usage policies.
Establish governance guardrails for analytical data consumption.
Develop data ownership, stewardship and accountability models.
Define governance processes for onboarding new datasets and users.
Create data classification and handling standards.
Establish approval workflows for access requests.
Access Management & Security
Design role-based access control (RBAC) model for BigQuery and related GCP services.
Implement least privilege access principles.
Design business-aligned access groups and entitlement structures.
Define privileged access management processes.
Establish periodic access review and recertification processes.
Work with security and compliance teams to ensure auditability and traceability.
Self-Service Enablement
Create a framework enabling business users to safely self-serve data.
Define data product consumption guidelines.
Support implementation of data cataloguing and metadata management practices.
Develop reusable access request workflows.
Create governance controls that minimize dependency on central data teams.
Enable trusted data domains for business consumption.
Operating Model & Change Management
Define Data Owner, Data Steward and Custodian responsibilities.
Create governance forums and decision-making processes.
Produce policy documentation, standards and user guidance.
Conduct stakeholder workshops and governance reviews.
Support adoption and organizational change management activities.
Essential skills/knowledge/experience Essential
8+ years in Data Governance, Data Management or Data Strategy roles.
Strong expertise in Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
Deep understanding of BigQuery security and access controls.
Experience designing enterprise data governance frameworks.
Experience implementing RBAC and access management models.
Strong stakeholder management and consulting skills.
Experience producing governance policies and operating models.
Knowledge of UK GDPR and data privacy principles.
Preferred
Experience in regulated sectors such as Utilities, Water, Energy or Financial Services.
Experience with Google Dataplex, Data Catalog, IAM and Cloud Identity.
Familiarity with ISO 27001 and information governance frameworks.
Experience implementing data ownership and stewardship models.
Experience enabling self-service analytics environments.
