Client is looking for an experienced PKI & HSM SME to support a large-scale security transformation Programme within the travel and tourism industry. The role focuses on the hands-on implementation, configuration, and troubleshooting of enterprise PKI and HSM services, including Microsoft ADCS, Microsoft Cloud PKI, self-managed hardware HSM platforms, and Azure-based HSM services.
The SME will be responsible for building and operating PKI and HSM components based on defined architecture, ensuring secure certificate services, proper key management, and reliable cryptographic operations across the environment. The role involves working closely with Security Architects, Infrastructure teams, and application teams to deliver and stabilize PKI services. This is a hands-on delivery role focused on implementation, configuration, troubleshooting, and operational readiness. The role is expected to bring strong technical understanding of PKI and HSM design concepts and to contribute SME input into technical design and implementation decisions where required.
Your responsibilities:
- Build and configure PKI services based on defined design
- Manage certificate lifecycle activities including issuance, renewal, revocation, and replacement
- Configure and maintain certificate distribution and validation services (CRL, OCSP)
- Integrate PKI services with HSM platforms based on environment requirements
- Perform HSM setup and administration including provisioning, backup, and high availability
- Execute key management activities including key generation, storage, rotation, and secure handling
- Support and participate in key ceremonies following defined procedures
- Apply security controls including access control, role separation, and dual control
- Support migration from legacy PKI environments to target solutions
- Troubleshoot issues related to certificates, trust chains, enrolment, and HSM operations
- Integrate PKI services with directory services, devices, and enterprise applications
- Maintain audit logs, monitoring, and operational records
- Produce technical documentation and support transition to BAU operations
Essential skills/knowledge/experience:
- Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft ADCS
- Experience with cloud-based PKI solutions such as Microsoft Cloud PKI
- Experience working with hardware HSM platforms such as Thales Luna HSM, Entrust nShield HSM or equivalent
- Experience with cloud-based HSM services such as Azure Key Vault Managed HSM
- Strong understanding of PKI concepts including CA hierarchy, certificate templates, CRL, and OCSP
- Experience in HSM administration including provisioning, partitioning, backup, and high availability
- Understanding of cryptographic principles and secure key management practices
- Experience executing or supporting key ceremonies
- Experience integrating PKI with Active Directory, Intune, and enterprise applications
- Strong troubleshooting capability across PKI and HSM environments
- Understanding of audit, compliance, and operational controls for PKI
- Experience working in enterprise build, migration, or transformation programmes
- 10 years of overall IT experience with at least 4+ years of hands-on experience in PKI and HSM environments
- Good documentation and communication skills
