We’re looking for someone to own and operate our backend data layer and partner closely with our suppliers to deliver reliable, low-latency digital experiences (web/app), integrations, and event-driven services. You’ll be accountable for database performance, cost, security, and data modelling, and you’ll help ensure supplier platform integrations are robust, well-documented, and observable in production.
Your responsibilities:
- Own the design, operation, and continuous improvement of database tables powering fan-facing and internal services.
- Create and maintain data models aligned to access patterns (partition/sort keys, GSIs/LSIs, item design, TTL, denormalisation strategies).
- Manage capacity/performance (on-demand vs provisioned, autoscaling, hot partitions, query patterns, latency tuning).
- Drive cost optimisation (table/index efficiency, item sizing, query design, caching patterns, lifecycle/TTL).
- Implement and test resilience & recovery (PITR, backups, restores, multi-region patterns where needed).
- Own security controls (IAM least privilege, KMS encryption, access auditing, secrets management).
- Maintain platform runbooks, operational dashboards, alerting, and incident response processes.
- Own ingestion and processing patterns (e.g., webhooks, polling, event streams) and ensure data quality and traceability to support integrations.
- Build/operate server-side components around AWS: Lambda, API Gateway, SQS/SNS, EventBridge, Step Functions.
- Ensure services meet reliability goals via: observability (CloudWatch logs/metrics/tracing), performance testing, and error budgets.
- Implement CI/CD and Infrastructure-as-Code for repeatable, auditable delivery.
Essential skills/knowledge/experience:
- Strong hands-on experience with noSQL in production (data modelling, indexes, performance and cost tuning).
- Experience building backend services using AWS Lambda and/or containerised services, plus API Gateway.
- Event-driven integration experience using SQS/SNS/EventBridge (or equivalent).
- Strong observability and ops mindset: monitoring, alerting, on-call/incident handling, root cause analysis.
- Infrastructure-as-Code experience (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, AWS CDK).
- Confident coding ability in TypeScript/Node.js, Python, or Java.
- Excellent stakeholder skills and comfort working with an external vendor on technical delivery.
Desirable skills/knowledge/experience:
- Innovative Thinker: Thinks ahead, generates ideas, and challenges the status quo.
- Flexible Working Style: Adapts working methods to fit different business areas.
- Collaborative: Values and respects others, builds relationships, and works well in team settings.
- Results-Oriented: Gets things done, delivers to high standards, and takes responsibility.
- Strong Communicator: Possesses excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy and meticulousness in all tasks.
- Organised and Proactive: Highly organised, self-sufficient, and proactive in approach.
- Analytical Problem Solver: Strong analytical skills with the ability to solve complex problems.
- Resilient and Motivated: Never gives up and is determined to find solutions to business challenges.
- Personable: Positive and outgoing, capable of working across a complex organisation and building relationships with stakeholders.
- Adaptable: Willing to support other areas outside of normal day-to-day responsibilities when needed.
- Multi-tasker: Able to handle multiple assignments and work independently.
