About the Opportunity

TCS Consulting is recruiting an Area Sales Engineer for a well-established engineering business operating across the UK & Ireland, with a current regional turnover of approximately £50 million. The business is entering a significant growth phase, supported by a strategic acquisition that expands its capability within cable, connector, and safety solutions, alongside its existing sensing portfolio. This acquisition strengthens routes to market, broadens the product offering, and supports continued investment in field-based sales talent.

This role has been created to drive new business development across sensors and safety products, working primarily with OEMs, machine builders, and system integrators.

Role Overview

The Area Sales Engineer will take full ownership of a defined territory, acting as a self-managed business unit responsible for customer engagement, pipeline development, pricing, and profitability. The role is field-focused and suits someone who enjoys being on the road, building relationships, and working to clear activity and performance targets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and grow a defined sales territory with a strong emphasis on new business development
  • Complete customer visits per month, focused on OEMs, machine builders, and integrators
  • Develop and maintain a healthy sales pipeline through disciplined territory planning and CRM usage
  • Promote a broad portfolio including sensors, machine safety solutions, barcode systems, positional feedback devices, and bespoke wiring solutions
  • Identify opportunities to cross-sell and increase share of customer accounts
  • Negotiate pricing and manage profitability at territory level
  • Work closely with internal sales, product managers, and applications specialists to progress opportunities
  • Maintain accurate CRM records including activity, pipeline, and project status
  • Balance time between customer visits, home-based closing activity, and pipeline management

Sales Performance & KPIs

Performance measured on:

  • Sales growth
  • Profitability and margin
  • Pipeline quality and conversion
  • Territory management discipline

Product & Market Focus

Core focus on sensors and machine safety products. Enhanced safety portfolio following recent acquisition, including safety edges, mats, and bumpers. Bespoke wiring and value-add workshop solutions contribute to overall offering. Primary customer base includes OEMs, machine builders, and system integrators with limited end-user focus at area sales level.

Candidate Profile

  • 12 months to 2.5+ years' experience in a field-based technical sales role
  • Background in sensors, automation, safety, or industrial components preferred
  • Experience selling into OEMs or machine builders
  • Strong sales discipline with the ability to plan territory activity and manage a pipeline
  • Comfortable working autonomously with full ownership of results
  • High energy, resilient, and motivated by activity-led sales environments

Location

Ideally based centrally within the territory for efficient travel. Typical locations may include areas such as Milton Keynes, Cambridge, Oxford, or similar.

Why This Role

  • Join a financially stable, growth-focused engineering business
  • Clear expectations, structured KPIs, and realistic earning potential
  • Broad, expanding product portfolio supported by recent acquisition
  • Autonomy and trust to run your territory as your own business
