The purpose of this role is to produce and maintain high quality systems to achieve business objectives through contributions to the development process including system design/architecture and performance management of the team. A team leader will work in partnership with relevant teams across the organisation to identify how technology can solve business challenges and be capable of answering “how and why” the technology is designed and delivered.
What you’ll do:
As a Team Leader, a large part of the day-to-day will involve coaching and mentoring other engineers, helping them develop better solutions and understand system design with a focus on their career progression and personal development. You will also be responsible for effective performance management and driving an environment of high performance. The Team Lead will also need to support the Product Manager in terms of understanding & scheduling of upcoming work including resourcing. They are responsible for the day-to-day running and delivery of the squad’s work stream.
Impact of role :
Strategy – Contributes to setting the technical strategy for the squad in partnership with the Principal Engineer (and support from Senior Engineers) taking into consideration the impact on the wider business and setting goals for their team that aligns with the strategy.
Delivery – Indirectly contributes to the delivery of solutions through assisting and unblocking others in the team providing the right level of preparation too. Will directly and individually contribute too but with a focus on ensuring high performance of the team. Continually reviewing current software engineering processes and practices implementing improvements with data and team-driven feedback. Manages the capacity of the team with the Product Manager.
Decision Making – Contributes and can lead to strategic decisions, taking tactical and operational decisions relating to the technology stack looking beyond the current feature work up to 1-3 months ahead. Mostly concentrating on shorter term decisioning to facilitate the delivery of the current feature. Will also factor in costs when considering solution choices. Regulatory and compliance considerations are highlighted.
Operational Mindset – Evangelises, enables and ensures the “you build it, you run it” mantra and always considers operational concerns as part of feature delivery and system design, including run books, monitoring, alerts and general maintenance. Nonfunctional requirements are designed for and, where unclear, provides support to the Product Manager so they can be shaped and understood.
Quality – Ensures contributions maintain quality standards in the form of adherence to ADRs, style policies and testing strategy through coaching and peer review. Contributes to the definition of the quality gates and standards, identifying opportunities for improvement and driving their implementation.
Risk & Incident Management – Understands, identifies and raises risks as necessary and assisting less experienced engineers with the risk process, embedding a “Think Risk” culture. Will contribute and also often facilitate with incidents, including their identification, management (handling and communication) and resolution while ensuring adherence to process to maintained.
