TBA Doncaster, a Konecranes company, is a leading international provider of software and services for ports and terminals. We aim to support our customers during the entire life cycle of their operation from design to implementation to optimisation of their operation. Our automation team delivers control systems and software for conveyor systems, machine handling, waste recycling plants, and industrial process applications.
Due to continued growth, we are looking to recruit an Automation Systems Engineer to join our Doncaster office on a permanent basis. This role would suit a practical, mid-level engineer who enjoys problem solving, commissioning, and working as part of a close engineering team. We are looking for someone with solid engineering fundamentals, a good attitude, and the willingness to continue developing technically.
Reporting to the Automation Director, and working under the direction of the Senior Engineers, you will work across the full project lifecycle including design, software development, testing, commissioning, and customer support.
The role of Automation Systems Engineer includes involvement in a variety of automation and controls projects, both in the office and on customer sites. Typical responsibilities will include:
- PLC software development and testing using Siemens systems (TIA Portal and Step 7)
- HMI and SCADA development
- Electrical and control system design
- Producing and modifying electrical drawings using EPLAN
- Hardware specification and configuration
- Site commissioning and fault finding
- Supporting customers with automation and control system issues
- Debugging and troubleshooting live systems
- Working alongside senior engineers on larger projects
- Supporting FATs, SATs, and commissioning activities
- Minor electrical panel modifications where required
Projects are varied and often fast-paced, so the role requires someone who can communicate well, work through problems methodically, and work collaboratively within the engineering team.
We are looking for someone with previous experience in automation or controls engineering who is comfortable working in practical industrial environments. You should have experience in some of the following areas:
- PLC programming using IEC61131 languages such as Ladder Logic (LAD), Function Block Diagram (FBD), and Structured Text (ST/SCL)
- Siemens automation systems
- Industrial electrical systems and control panels
- Fault finding and troubleshooting
- Electrical drawings and documentation
- Commissioning and site-based engineering work
Experience with any of the following would also be beneficial, but is not essential:
- Rockwell or Schneider PLC systems
- SCADA systems
- EPLAN
- Electric Python, C#, JavaScript, or database systems
- Materials handling, ports, conveyors, or waste recycling systems
We are interested in finding someone with good engineering fundamentals, problem-solving ability, and the right attitude rather than someone who has worked with every technology listed above.
The right candidate will be:
- Organised and reliable
- Comfortable working within a project team
- Willing to ask questions and learn from others
- Able to communicate clearly with customers and colleagues
- Motivated to develop technically
- Practical and hands-on in their approach
- Calm and methodical when fault finding
- Someone who takes ownership of problems and follows them through to completion
Qualifications and experience:
- HNC/HND or higher in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
- Previous experience within an automation, controls, or industrial engineering role
- Industrial site experience would be advantageous
- Panel wiring or installation experience would be beneficial
What we offer:
- Competitive salary depending on experience
- 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
- Early finish on Fridays
- Hybrid working
- Pension scheme
- Private medical insurance
- Death in service benefit
- Opportunity to work on a wide range of technically interesting projects
- Supportive team environment with opportunities for progression and development
This is an opportunity to join a growing automation team working on real industrial systems with genuine project ownership and long-term development opportunities.
