Power System Design Engineer – HV Substation & BESS Projects (EPC)

We’re looking for an experienced Power System Design Engineer to join a growing engineering team, supporting the delivery of high‑voltage substation and battery energy storage (BESS) projects across the UK.

In this role, you’ll develop the electrical designs and studies that form the foundation of complex EPC projects – ensuring grid‑compliant, safe, and reliable operation of HV networks and renewable systems.

You’ll work collaboratively with civil, protection, SCADA, construction, and commissioning teams to deliver designs that are technically robust, cost‑effective, and practical to build.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver electrical design packages for HV substations, grid connections, and BESS projects (typically 11‑400 kV).
  • Develop SLDs, equipment layouts, cable schedules, interconnection diagrams, and earthing/bonding designs.
  • Perform power system studies including load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, harmonic, and stability analysis.
  • Support grid connection applications, compliance submissions, and power system modelling for DNO/TO/NGESO interfaces.
  • Prepare technical specifications for major electrical equipment (transformers, switchgear, cabling, earthing systems, etc.).
  • Liaise with network operators and stakeholders to ensure compliance with Grid Code, G99, ENA, and National Grid standards.
  • Provide design support through procurement, construction, and commissioning phases.
  • Conduct design reviews, manage deliverables, and maintain quality control via digital project platforms (e.g., Procore or equivalent).
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure fully integrated project designs.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to improving internal design processes and technical standards.

About You

Essential:

  • Degree (BEng/MEng) in Electrical or Power Engineering.
  • 3+ years’ experience in power system design for HV substations, grid connections, or BESS projects.
  • Strong understanding of HV/LV electrical systems, grid code compliance, and DNO/TO standards in the UK.
  • Skilled in power system modelling software (DIgSILENT PowerFactory, ETAP, PSCAD, IPSA, or similar).
  • Familiarity with IEC, ENA, and National Grid specifications.
  • Experience working in an EPC or multi‑disciplinary engineering environment.

Desirable:

  • Understanding of BESS operation, control philosophy, and grid integration.
  • Knowledge of functional safety, interlocking logic, and commissioning activities.
  • Experience with digital design or project management platforms (Procore, BIM 360, Aconex).
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working toward professional registration (IET).

What\’s on Offer

  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
  • Exposure to full EPC project lifecycles – from feasibility to commissioning.
  • Opportunities to work on some of the UK\’s most innovative renewable and grid‑scale energy projects.
  • Ongoing mentorship, technical training, and chartership support.
  • A collaborative, innovative, and forward‑thinking team environment.
