We are recruiting for an experienced Operations Manager to take overall responsibility for the safe, efficient and commercially successful operation of a busy organics and waste processing facility in Blantyre. This is a senior site-based position with responsibility for operational performance, HSEQ, environmental compliance, plant throughput, budgets, maintenance and people management. The successful candidate will lead the operational team while driving continuous improvement, profitability and high standards across the facility.
Key Responsibilities
- Take overall responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the organics and waste processing facility
- Lead the commissioning and operational development of the new facility
- Manage waste processing operations from material acceptance through to screening
- Ensure full Health & Safety and environmental compliance across the site
- Promote a positive safety culture and provide visible H&S leadership
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, waste management licences, PAS100, APHA requirements and planning consents
- Set, monitor and deliver operational KPIs covering safety, throughput, quality, efficiency and profitability
- Manage operational budgets and contribute to annual budgeting and financial planning
- Drive sustainable profit growth through operational optimisation and cost control
- Identify and implement process improvements, new technologies and continuous improvement initiatives
- Lead the maintenance function to ensure effective plant maintenance, inspections and compliance
- Manage, develop and mentor operational employees, supervisors and engineering personnel
- Ensure appropriate training, risk assessments and competency requirements are maintained
- Support commercial activities including incoming waste contracts, tenders and offtake arrangements
- Manage relationships with customers, local authorities, suppliers and regulatory bodies
- Maintain consistently high standards of housekeeping and operational performance
Experience & Qualifications
We are looking for an experienced operational leader with a background in waste management, recycling, organics or a similar continuous process environment. You should ideally have:
- Previous experience as an Operations Manager, Site Manager, Plant Manager, Recycling Manager or similar operational leadership position
- Strong waste management, recycling or organics operations experience
- Experience managing a waste processing or continuous process facility
- Proven experience leading and developing operational teams
- Strong understanding of Health & Safety and environmental compliance
- Knowledge of relevant waste industry legislation and regulations
- Experience managing operational budgets, costs and P&L
- Understanding of plant maintenance and maintenance management systems
- Strong KPI management and continuous improvement experience
- Good commercial awareness and understanding of operational profitability
- Strong communication, problem-solving and stakeholder management skills
- IOSH Managing Safely or above
- CoTC qualification or willingness to work towards the qualification
- Project management experience would be advantageous
