Our client, a values-led building society, is seeking an experienced governance and legal professional for the role of Society Secretary, Legal Counsel & Data Protection Officer. This is a part-time position (2 to 3 days per week), based in Staffordshire, reporting to the Chief Executive.
Acting as a trusted adviser to the Chair, Board and Executive team, you will ensure the Society operates to the highest standards of corporate governance, legal compliance and regulatory integrity. You will support the effective functioning of the Board and its Committees, maintain governance frameworks and documentation, and provide clear, pragmatic advice on corporate law, governance and regulatory matters.
As Legal Counsel, you will advise on a range of commercial and customer-related issues across mortgage and savings operations, managing legal risk, drafting and negotiating contracts, and working with external advisers where specialist input is required.
In addition, as Data Protection Officer, you will oversee the Society’s data protection framework, ensure compliance with UK GDPR and DPA 2018, and act as the primary point of contact with the ICO.
The ideal candidate will have strong company secretarial experience within financial services or another regulated environment, alongside a broad understanding of corporate governance and regulation. You will be confident operating at Board level, able to work independently, and bring sound judgement, integrity and a collaborative but appropriately challenging approach.
