Psychodynamic Psychotherapist

This position has been introduced to enable flexible delivery within a portfolio of courses, and where appropriate, across portfolios. It aims to facilitate the post holder in implementing a wide range of skills within an integrated post. At senior level, the post holder will be required to undertake a leadership role in relation to an aspect of course delivery, in this instance, the assessment component of the MA in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (M58), which is accredited by the British Psychoanalytic Council. The post holder will work flexibly across a range of programmes to provide teaching, supervision and tuition to master\’s and where appropriate, doctoral students, as required. The post holder will also be involved in recruitment and assessment processes and will assist flexibly in all aspects of course delivery within the portfolio and other portfolios where relevant.

The MA in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (M58) is situated within the DET Psychoanalytic Portfolio. Other courses currently within this portfolio are:

  • Masters in Psychological Therapy with Children, Young People and Families, (M34) BPC accredited
  • Trust Certificate in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy for Child & Adolescent Psychiatrists (M14) BPC accredited
  • Trust Certificate in Interdisciplinary Training in Adult Psychotherapy (M1) BPC accredited
  • Doctorate in Psychoanalytic Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy (M80) ACP accredited

Main duties of the job

The position of Psychodynamic Psychotherapist has been introduced to enable flexible delivery within a portfolio of courses, and where appropriate, across portfolios. At senior level, the post holder will be required to undertake a leadership role in relation to an aspect of course delivery such as module leadership; assessment; recruitment etc. The postholder will work flexibly across a range of programmes to provide teaching, supervision and tuition to master\’s and where appropriate, doctoral students, as required. The postholder will also be involved in recruitment and assessment processes and will assist flexibly in all aspects of course delivery within the portfolio and other portfolios where relevant.

Job responsibilities

Where appropriate contribute to the teaching and supervision on a range of courses including complex clinical and/or research based Masters and where appropriate, Doctoral programmes, within the Psychoanalytic Portfolio and related portfolios as required. If allocated module leadership responsibility, this will involve ensuring all administrative tasks, curriculum, teaching, reading lists, and related activities are managed in line with course expectations under the direction of the Course Leads.

To deliver asynchronous lectures, face to face or online workshops and seminars across the programmes.

Where appropriate to provide clinical or research supervision to students across courses in the portfolio and responding to often highly complex issues requiring consideration of a range of possible options and providing expert knowledge and input.

To act as personal tutor to allocated students on a range of programmes and liaising with the student support and engagement lead as required.

To attend a mandatory EDI training (a minimum of one day).

To ensure teaching and supervision integrates an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory framework and takes account of equality, diversity and inclusion.

To contribute to marketing initiatives when required, including attendance at Trust-wide and course specific open events for prospective students.

Person Specification

  • UK recognised qualification in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy/Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy/ Psychoanalysis, Psychoanalysis and registration with the BPC.
  • Substantial experience of teaching students in higher education
  • Capacity to engage students from a wide range of educational, cultural and social backgrounds and ensure issues of equality, diversity and inclusion are attended to across all aspects of role
  • Commitment to and track record in anti- discriminatory, anti-racist practice and teaching
  • Track record of writing for publication
