We are looking for a Salaried GP to join our friendly and dynamic team. You must be a fully qualified GP with GMC registration and inclusion on the NHS Performers List. Be committed to delivering patient-focused care with a collaborative approach. Have a keen interest in contributing to practice innovation and development. Have excellent communication and organisational skills.

We offer flexible working arrangements with a choice of 10-15 minute appointments with capped patient numbers per session. We are a training practice with the opportunity to mentor and supervise ST1/2/3 and medical students and take part in delivering tutorials. Opportunity for career progression, including mentorship and leadership roles. Indemnity covered by the practice. 6 weeks annual leave and 1 week study leave. Access to a multidisciplinary team and excellent administrative support. We are an active practice and encourage lunchtime walks or exercise with standing desks in each room.

This role is for 4 to 6 sessions per week with a salary from £11,200 per session.

Main duties of the job:
  • Direct clinical care - Consulting with patients (face-to-face, telephone and/or online as agreed). Assessing, diagnosing and managing acute illness and long-term conditions. Providing health advice, safety-netting and appropriate follow-up. Undertaking home visits where part of the agreed model. Making referrals to secondary care and community services when clinically indicated.
  • Indirect clinical care (clinical administration) - Reviewing and actioning test results and investigations. Processing clinical correspondence (hospital letters, discharge summaries). Completing referrals, fit notes and other clinical documentation. Managing repeat prescribing and medication reviews (as per practice systems). Handling clinical tasks/messages and ensuring appropriate coding and record-keeping.
  • Clinical governance, quality and safety - Participating in Significant Event Analyses (SEA) and learning from incidents/near misses. Contributing to audit and quality improvement activity (where feasible and relevant). Supporting safe systems (e.g. results handling, prescribing, recalls, safeguarding processes). Engaging with infection prevention and control (IPC) processes relevant to clinical work. Responding to safety alerts (e.g. CAS/MHRA) in line with practice processes.

As a member of the WBC Primary Care Network, we work closely with Cantilupe Surgery and Wargrave House Surgery offering additional patient services including medicines management, social prescribing and health and well-being support.

Job responsibilities:
  • The delivery of highly effective medical care to the entitled population.
  • The provision of services commensurate with the primary care contract.
  • To clinically examine and assess patient needs from a physiological and psychological perspective and plan clinical care accordingly referring patients to other services/agencies in a timely manner, utilising Practice and any other local guidelines.
  • Generic prescribing adhering to local and national guidance.
  • Prioritise health problems and intervene appropriately to assist the patient in complex, urgent or emergency situations, including initiation of effective emergency care.
  • Effective management of long-term conditions.
  • To support patients to adopt health promotion strategies that promote healthy lifestyles and apply principles of self-care.
  • Processing of administration in a timely manner, including referrals, repeat prescription requests and other associated administrative tasks.
  • Review of medications following the appropriate policies, NICE/local clinical guidelines and local care pathways.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records in conjunction with good practice, policy and guidance.
  • Work collaboratively, accepting an equal share of the practice workload.
  • Adhere to best practice recommended through clinical guidelines and the audit process.
  • Support the delivery of anticipatory care plans.
  • Contribute to the successful implementation of continuous improvement and quality initiatives within the practice.
  • Accept delegated responsibility for a specific area (or areas) or the QOF.
  • Attend and contribute effectively to practice meetings as required.
  • Contribute effectively to the development and maintenance of the practice including clinical governance and training.
  • Be aware of your duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to practice policies and procedures on Safeguarding Adults and Safeguarding Children. Ensure compliance with the appraisal process.
  • Prepare and complete the revalidation process to remain fit to practice.
  • Commit to self-learning and instil an ethos of continuing professional development across the practice team.
  • Review and always adhere to practice protocols and policies.
  • Encourage collaborative working, liaising with all staff regularly, always promoting a culture of continuous improvement.
  • To be an integral part of the general practice team as well as supporting the wider network and multi-disciplinary team.
  • There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks, this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels.
Person Specification:
  • Qualifications: Qualified GP, MRCGP, Vocational Training Certificate or equivalent, JCPTGP Certificate of Completion of Training - CCT.
  • Experience: Ability to both work autonomously and as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Experience of working in a primary care environment. Experience of providing home visits. General understanding of the primary care contract. Proven ability to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of own clinical practice. Minimum of two years as a salaried GP. An appreciation of the NHS landscape and relationship between individual organisations, PCNs and the commissioners. Full GMC registration. Performers List registration noting that confirmation on this list is adequate for DBS confirmation. Evidence of current validation. Evidence of last appraisal. Eligibility to practice in the UK independently.

  • Other Requirements: Occupational health clearance. Flexibility to work outside of core office hours. Evidence of continuing professional development commensurate with the role. Access to own transport and ability to travel across the locality on a regular basis.
  • Clinical Knowledge & Skills: Outstanding level of clinical knowledge and skills commensurate with that of an experienced GP. Understanding of the importance of evidence-based practice. Good MS Office and clinical system IT knowledge. Understanding of the spectrum of clinical governance processes. Excellent communication skills (written and oral) including recording of accurate clinical notes. Ability to work within own scope of practice and understand when to refer to GP colleagues. Experience of triage and the ability to effectively assess and diagnose. Ability to listen whilst being honest and caring and be both sensitive and empathetic in distressing situations. Understanding of the local pathology tests processes and the ability to process the results and advising patients accordingly. Ability to assess and manage acute deteriorations/exacerbations of long-term conditions. Understanding of safeguarding adults and children. Understanding of the importance of evidence-based practice. Knowledge of health promotion strategies. Experience of medicines management. Knowledge of public health issues in the local area. Understanding and knowledge of QOF and enhanced service.
