The Paper Conservator for acquisitions provides specialist knowledge on the care and conservation of historical and modern works of art on paper. Day to day, you will undertake condition assessments, technical examination, conservation treatment and research on artists materials and techniques, to ensure the long-term preservation of the collection. You will provide advice on mounting, framing, installation, packing and storage, and advocate for the conservation of works of art on paper to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
Responsibilities
- Provide condition assessments, technical examination, conservation treatment and research on artists’ materials and techniques to preserve works on paper.
- Advise on mounting, framing, installation, packing and storage.
- Advocate for the conservation of works of art on paper to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
- Collaborate with the Paper and Photographs Conservation team as they treat a broad range of artworks, develop new ideas, provide solutions, and collaborate with colleagues.
- Collaborate across programme areas from Loans-out, Acquisitions, Exhibitions & Displays and Library & Archive.
- Support the Conservation department as part of Tate’s Collection Care division, with specialist areas including Time-based media, Paintings, Frames and Workshop, Sculpture and Installation Art, Paper and Photographs, Conservation Science and Preventive Conservation.
- Contribute to excellence and innovation in the care of Tate’s Collection, preventing damage and deterioration, and ensuring that the Collection is available for future generations to enjoy.
Qualifications
- Experience and expertise in the care and conservation of works on paper.
- Ability to undertake condition assessments, technical examination and conservation treatment and research on artists’ materials and techniques.
- Experience advising on mounting, framing, installation, packing and storage.
- Strong communication skills for working with specialist and non-specialist audiences.
