The CAD Engineer works closely with Project Managers/Project Engineers to manage and create all documentation associated with projects. This documentation will primarily be created on CAD, and the scope of the job will span all elements of the project life cycle inclusive of gathering project requirements, preliminary and final design, cost budgeting and accounting, schedule development and control, procurement of equipment and materials, project monitoring and control, and project commissioning and closing. Work will also include updating management of documentation and/or documentation of existing systems. Additionally, the role includes the development and use of 3D CAD models and point cloud (laser scan) data to support brownfield design, layout development, and spatial validation. The CAD Engineer must be able to interpret point cloud models, extract relevant information, and assess spatial constraints, interfaces, and overlays within existing facilities.

Detailed Roles & Responsibilities

  • Prepare complex drawings – e.g., PFDs, P&IDs, scaled equipment layouts, etc.
  • Update existing drawings to reflect modifications and improvements to existing systems
  • Check and revise own drawings as needed
  • Perform all field measurements which may be required to complete an assignment
  • Perform basic calculations to determine material requirements – e.g., volume, load, stress, etc.
  • Check vendor design drawings for major equipment against purchase specifications
  • Prepare purchase requisitions as necessary
  • May participate in and/or provide technical assistance on equipment start‑up operations, and on solutions to maintenance problems which are within their area of responsibility
  • May direct contractors and in‑plant labor on project implementation
  • Complete assignments in a neat, accurate and professional manner
  • Maintain orderly drawing files, catalog files, equipment files and instruction books
  • Keep current in discipline, assess new technologies and ideas, develop, evaluate, and seek approval for new concepts or equipment to improve efficiency capability
  • Carry out any other additional duties as required within the reasonable scope of the department
  • Develop and manage AutoCAD 2D and 3D models in support of project delivery
  • Use AutoCAD Plant 3D selectively in line with company work instructions to avoid generation of heavy or non-user-friendly models
  • Work with point cloud (laser scan) models to extract geometry and develop accurate layouts for brownfield environments
  • Evaluate spatial constraints, interferences and clashes using overlay of point cloud data and proposed designs
  • Convert complex 3D and point cloud data into clean, simplified 2D deliverables suitable for project teams and contractors
  • Generate and support isometric drawings and Bill of Materials (BOM) aligned with Plant 3D outputs

Essential Capabilities (knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Personal Attributes)

  • Proficient computer background – must be fluent in AutoCAD and MS Project
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required – must be able to effectively communicate and coordinate with refinery team
  • Strong desire to work on [and research as necessary] a variety of projects required
  • Familiarity with GMP, SQF, NFPA, ANSI, and ASTM guidelines required
  • Experience with OSHA standards required and working knowledge of PD5500 and mechanical inspection & testing
  • Expert knowledge of AutoCAD 2D and strong capability in AutoCAD 3D modelling
  • Strong knowledge of piping systems and structural layouts within industrial environments
  • Ability to interpret and work with point cloud datasets and extract relevant engineering information
  • Strong spatial awareness with the ability to assess brownfield constraints and interfaces
  • Ability to balance model complexity with usability in line with company CAD standards and work instructions

Essential Work Experiences

  • Experience with design and drafting in a CAD environment required
  • Experience with the design of piping and mechanical systems in an industrial environment required (common systems include belt conveyors, screw conveyors and bucket elevators)
  • Experience with mechanical design and materials selection required
  • CAD experience in an industrial environment – experience using AutoCAD Plant 3D for piping design and isometric generation
  • Experience working with point cloud / laser scan data for layout development in brownfield conditions
  • Preferred: experience with Revit or BIM environments

Essential Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant discipline
