Due to our continued growth we are now recruiting for a Project Engineer – Sockets & Wireless Charging to be based at our customer’s site in Bicester.
Our Embedded Systems Solutions department (ESS) encompasses all activities outlined under the Automotive SPICE (ASPICE) process framework, including systems engineering, software engineering, coding, and all levels of functional testing. Beyond core development, ESS also integrates critical supporting processes such as project management, risk assessment, functional safety, and cybersecurity, ensuring compliance with ASPICE standards and delivering reliable, secure, and high-quality embedded systems & solutions.
The USB, Socket, and Wireless Charging Engineer is responsible for the design, development, integration, and validation of in-vehicle power and connectivity interfaces, including USB ports, 12V/AC power sockets, and wireless charging systems. The role ensures that these interfaces meet performance, safety, regulatory, and customer experience requirements across vehicle programs. The engineer collaborates with cross-functional teams including interior systems, infotainment, electrical architecture, suppliers, and manufacturing to deliver robust and high-quality charging and power solutions for modern vehicles.
Area of Responsibility
- Lead the design and development of USB charging/data ports, power sockets (12V/AC), and wireless charging modules for vehicle interior systems.
- Define system requirements, interface specifications, and performance targets for power delivery and connectivity interfaces.
- Manage integration of charging interfaces within the vehicle electrical architecture and infotainment systems.
- Coordinate with suppliers to develop hardware solutions, review designs, and ensure compliance with OEM standards.
- Perform system-level validation and testing, including electrical performance, thermal behaviour, EMC/EMI, and durability testing.
- Ensure compliance with relevant automotive, electrical, and wireless charging standards (e.g., USB Power Delivery, Qi wireless charging).
- Support vehicle packaging and interior integration, working closely with interior design and mechanical engineering teams.
- Investigate and resolve issues related to charging performance, compatibility, and user experience.
- Contribute to DFMEA, DVP&R, and engineering change management processes.
- Provide technical guidance during prototype builds, vehicle testing, and production launch phases.
- Analyze customer feedback and field issues to drive continuous improvement of charging interfaces.
Knowledge / Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Electronic Engineering, or related discipline.
- Strong understanding of USB technologies (USB 2.0/3.x, USB-C, USB Power Delivery).
- Knowledge of automotive power distribution systems (12V, 48V where applicable).
- Experience with wireless charging technologies, particularly Qi-based systems.
- Familiarity with automotive electrical integration, wiring harnesses, and connectors.
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics and system architecture diagrams.
- Experience with automotive development processes (e.g., DFMEA, DVP&R, requirements management).
- Understanding of EMC/EMI considerations in automotive electronics.
- Strong problem-solving and root-cause analysis skills.
- Ability to work with cross-functional teams and manage supplier technical discussions.
Preferred Skills
- Experience working within an automotive OEM or Tier 1 supplier environment.
- Knowledge of USB certification processes and compliance testing.
- Familiarity with Qi wireless charging certification and interoperability testing.
- Experience with vehicle interior electronics integration.
- Knowledge of CAN/LIN communication used for power management or charging modules.
- Experience with automotive validation testing, environmental testing, and reliability standards.
- Exposure to charging compatibility challenges with consumer devices (smartphones, tablets, etc.).
- Understanding of vehicle infotainment system interfaces and data connectivity through USB.
- Experience supporting vehicle launch and production readiness activities.
