The Project Engineer - USB, Socket, and Wireless Charging Interface is responsible for the design, development, integration, and validation of in-vehicle power and connectivity interfaces, including USB ports, 12V/AC power sockets, and wireless charging systems. The role ensures that these interfaces meet performance, safety, regulatory, and customer experience requirements across vehicle programs. The engineer collaborates with cross-functional teams including interior systems, infotainment, electrical architecture, suppliers, and manufacturing to deliver robust and high-quality charging and power solutions for modern vehicles.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of USB charging/data ports, power sockets (12V/AC), and wireless charging modules for vehicle interior systems.
- Define system requirements, interface specifications, and performance targets for power delivery and connectivity interfaces.
- Manage integration of charging interfaces within the vehicle electrical architecture and infotainment systems.
- Coordinate with suppliers to develop hardware solutions, review designs, and ensure compliance with OEM standards.
- Perform system-level validation and testing, including electrical performance, thermal behaviour, EMC/EMI, and durability testing.
- Ensure compliance with relevant automotive, electrical, and wireless charging standards (e.g., USB Power Delivery, Qi wireless charging).
- Support vehicle packaging and interior integration, working closely with interior design and mechanical engineering teams.
- Investigate and resolve issues related to charging performance, compatibility, and user experience.
- Contribute to DFMEA, DVP&R, and engineering change management processes.
- Provide technical guidance during prototype builds, vehicle testing, and production launch phases.
- Analyse customer feedback and field issues to drive continuous improvement of charging interfaces.
Required Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Electronic Engineering, or related discipline.
- Strong understanding of USB technologies (USB 2.0/3.x, USB-C, USB Power Delivery).
- Knowledge of automotive power distribution systems (12V, 48V where applicable).
- Experience with wireless charging technologies, particularly Qi-based systems.
- Familiarity with automotive electrical integration, wiring harnesses, and connectors.
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics and system architecture diagrams.
- Experience with automotive development processes (e.g., DFMEA, DVP&R, requirements management).
- Understanding of EMC/EMI considerations in automotive electronics.
- Strong problem-solving and root-cause analysis skills.
- Ability to work with cross-functional teams and manage supplier technical discussions.
Preferred Skills
- Experience working within an automotive OEM or Tier 1 supplier environment.
- Knowledge of USB certification processes and compliance testing.
- Familiarity with Qi wireless charging certification and interoperability testing.
- Experience with vehicle interior electronics integration.
- Knowledge of CAN/LIN communication used for power management or charging modules.
- Experience with automotive validation testing, environmental testing, and reliability standards.
- Exposure to charging compatibility challenges with consumer devices (smartphones, tablets, etc.).
- Understanding of vehicle infotainment system interfaces and data connectivity through USB.
- Experience supporting vehicle launch and production readiness activities.
