Overview
In this role you lead process safety across the Shotton Building Systems site, driving safe, compliant, and efficient engineering operations. You shape safety strategy, ensure regulatory compliance, and support plant integrity and business performance. You’ll work across manufacturing activities to implement risk controls and continuous safety improvements. Responsibilities
- Lead process safety engineering across site operations (steel processing, roll forming, slitting, fabrication, composites)
- Ensure compliance with legal and company safety standards (PUWER, LOLER, pressure systems, HAZOP/PHA)
- Develop and maintain safety systems: risk assessments, safe working procedures, permit-to-work, isolation procedures, management of change
- Manage contractor safety performance and adherence to standards
- Coordinate and maintain the Process Safety System and Critical Plant Register
- Monitor and control process safety and engineering budgets
- Collaborate with Manufacturing and Logistics to support operational continuity
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives (e.g., TPM programmes)
- Maintain integrity and control of critical spare parts inventories
- Keep up to date with plant design, technology, and safety practices
Key requirements
- Degree-qualified in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering
- Chartered Engineer status (preferred)
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in process safety systems
- Strong knowledge of HAZOP, PHA, and process safety methodologies
- Experience with pressure systems, materials, chemicals, and related technologies
- Proven leadership with ability to influence across functions
- Understanding of engineering and production technologies
- Familiarity with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001
- Experience managing budgets, capex, and contractor relationships
- IT proficiency including Microsoft Office, SAP/Stratix, and project management systems
- Leadership and people management capability
- Analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills
- High attention to safety and compliance
- HAZOP and PHA methodologies
- Process safety systems and risk assessment techniques
- Safety management systems (SWPs, Permit-to-Work, isolation procedures, MOC)
