We are currently looking to recruit a Rail Inspector for our onsite rail services team. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to be a part of a team which inspects and maintains over 20km of private rail within the South Wales area. The primary place of work will be Port Talbot, however you may be required to support other sites within the UK Tata group. A driving license is essential for this role.
You’ll be expected to take pride in your work, keeping the area clean and tidy and always looking for ways to improve how things are done. Most importantly, you’ll carry out every task with safety at the forefront – following site rules and making sure you and those around you go home safe each day. Track inspecting qualification is beneficial but not essential as training will be provided. When inspections are completed you will integrate into the maintenance team to lead and support on routine maintenance, renewals and upgrades.
Flexibility is essential, as the nature of the work makes it necessary for the team, between them, to be prepared and available to meet the current work requirements which are outside of normal working hours including nights, weekends, evenings and public holidays to cover emergency and unplanned rail events at Llanwern and Port Talbot to ensure business continuity.
You will undertake all tasks associated with Permanent Way inspection, maintenance, installation and renewals. You will undertake Person In Charge of Working Party duties including completing the Point Of Work Risk Assessment, signing permits and liaising with other departments where required to ensure work requirements are able to proceed. You may lead a small team providing work instructions and cover Team Leader duties during periods of absence.
The work pattern is Monday to Friday, 39 hours per week on a day shift basis, offering an excellent work/life balance. Monday – Thursday 07:30-15:30. Friday 07:30 –14:30.
Responsibilities
- Complete inspections on the Tata rail infrastructure
- Perform maintenance and renewal work on the Tata rail infrastructure
- Adhere to the required standards
- Operate plant and tools (where qualified)
- Update SAP using I.T systems, including raising notifications
- Complete documents and feedback forms for work completed
- Support the Engineer to prioritise and plan work
- Lead a small team
- Cover Team Leader duties during periods of absence
- Complete required permits and area sign on procedures
Punctuality, time keeping and strong team working skills are crucial for this role.
What are we looking for
- You will hold a NVQ Level 2 in Rail Engineering, typically gained via a time served apprenticeship or equivalent as a minimum
- Driving license is essential.
- Personal Track Safety / Small Tools / Plant operating license (desirable)
- Rail industry experience and knowledge, specifically track inspecting of plain line and SC
- Punctuality, time keeping and strong team working skills are crucial for this role
- The ability to identify improvement opportunities
- The ability to follow tasks based instruction and provide clear feedback both written and verbally
- You will have good communication skills and have a strong understanding of safety and environment impacts for the given job level
- You must be able to work as part of a multi-disciplined team and must possess good risk awareness when planning and undertaking tasks, and be able to challenge those who do not
- You will be familiar in the use of I.T., in particular Microsoft Office applications.
- Prior experience with a computerised maintenance management system (SAP) would be advantageous.
