We currently have an opportunity for a Mechanical asset improvement engineer to join our plant in Port Talbot. Reporting to the Section Engineer – Asset Improvement, you will play a key role in improving the reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety of production-critical crane assets across the Port Talbot site. Working as part of a dedicated Asset Improvement Team, you will support the development and implementation of asset strategies, reliability improvement programmes, condition monitoring initiatives, and engineering projects aligned with the long-term asset management objectives of the business.

You will be responsible for analysing asset performance, identifying reliability improvement opportunities, supporting root cause failure investigations, and delivering engineering solutions that reduce risk, improve operational performance, and extend asset life. The role will work closely with maintenance, planning, operations, and project teams to ensure engineering improvements are effectively implemented and deliver measurable business benefits.

Responsibilities with this position will include but not be limited to:

  • Asset Improvement & Reliability
    • Support the development and delivery of reliability and asset improvement strategies for production-critical crane assets.
    • Analyse asset performance, maintenance history, and condition monitoring data to identify improvement opportunities.
    • Lead and support root cause investigations into significant failures and recurring defects, ensuring effective corrective actions are implemented.
    • Develop engineering solutions to improve asset reliability, availability, maintainability, and lifecycle performance.
    • Support refurbishment, upgrade, and life-extension programmes for existing assets.
  • Engineering Support & Governance
    • Provide specialist mechanical engineering support to maintenance, operations, and project teams.
    • Support the development and optimisation of maintenance strategies using reliability-centred maintenance principles and best practice.
    • Ensure engineering activities comply with LOLER, PUWER, TSUK engineering standards, and site Safe Working Procedures.
    • Develop and review engineering documentation, including standards, specifications, risk assessments, and safe working procedures.
    • Provide technical support during Management of Change (MoC) activities and engineering modifications.
  • Project Delivery & Continuous Improvement
    • Support the delivery of SRE and CAPEX projects from concept through to implementation.
    • Provide technical expertise and guidance during the specification, procurement, installation and commissioning of new crane assets and major asset improvement projects, ensuring alignment with safety, reliability and operational requirements.
    • Work collaboratively with manufacturing, maintenance, planning, electrical, and contractor teams to deliver asset improvement objectives.
    • Identify opportunities to improve safety, reliability, productivity, and cost efficiency.
    • Promote engineering best practice and continuous improvement across the organisation.

The Candidate

Some of the key attributes we are looking for in applicants include:

  • HND, Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, ideally supported by a recognised apprenticeship.
  • Strong knowledge of cranes, lifting equipment, gearboxes, brakes, drive systems, rotating equipment, and structural components.
  • Experience in reliability improvement techniques such as RCA, RCM, FMEA, and condition monitoring.
  • Working knowledge of LOLER, PUWER, Permit-to-Work systems, and safe systems of work.
  • Experience delivering engineering improvements, refurbishment projects, or small CAPEX projects.
  • Experience using SAP or equivalent CMMS systems.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Understanding of contractor management and Management of Change processes.
  • Ideally IOSH qualified.
  • Proven technical knowledge within a heavy industrial or manufacturing environment.
