We’re looking for a motivated Laboratory Technician to join our on-site Laboratory Services team at Tata Steel Shotton. This is a key role supporting environmental compliance and product quality assurance across our busy steel manufacturing site. We welcome applications from candidates seeking either full-time or part-time hours, provided you're available to work a 5-day week. The working pattern includes regular weekend working, shared on a rota basis, which plays a critical part in ensuring uninterrupted environmental and quality monitoring across the site.

What you will do

As a Laboratory Technician, you’ll carry out a broad range of sampling and analytical work that supports both our product testing and environmental monitoring activities. Your work will directly contribute to the smooth running of site operations, timely product release, and compliance with key safety and quality standards. Your main responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Collecting samples from designated areas across site
  • Performing laboratory testing using wet chemistry techniques and ICP-OES
  • Testing paint quality using rheometry, solids measurement, and drawdowns
  • Accurately recording and reporting data in lab systems
  • Supporting the calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment
  • Maintaining and updating quality documentation
  • Participating in internal and external audits
  • Cross-training across other lab functions to provide sickness and holiday cover

You’ll work closely with colleagues in Environmental, Facilities, and Manufacturing teams, as well as contribute to the site’s environmental permit monitoring - an essential function at our Shotton site, which contains a Site of Special Scientific Interest and has been recognised with the Wildlife Trust Benchmark Award.

What you will need

We’re seeking someone with a scientific mindset, strong attention to detail, and the willingness to support a busy operational lab. You should be:

  • Educated to A-level, HNC or equivalent in a science-based subject
  • Experienced in laboratory work and familiar with common test methods and equipment
  • A good team player with clear communication skills
  • Flexible, dependable, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a wider team
  • In possession of a full UK driving licence (required for sample collection across site)
  • Able to work weekends when required
