Are you an engineering leader who thrives in complex, heavy‑industry environments and is ready to drive maintenance excellence across a major manufacturing site? Following a multi-million pound investment to reconfigure our site, including a new Cold Mill, new Warehousing facilities, new Engineering Workshops and Stores, the Works Engineer will be integral to developing the maintenance excellence programme for this facility and delivery of the reliability and operational standards, as well as having a key role in identifying, developing and managing the implementation of future Capital Expenditure schemes for the site.
Together with functional responsibility for the engineering team, the Works Engineer is a key member of the Corby Operations Leadership Team (COLT), collectively responsible for the delivery of safety, performance, financial and development metrics, and defining and driving site strategy.
The Works Engineer leads a team of skilled Engineering Professionals to ensure that manufacturing assets and the supporting site infrastructure are maintained to the high engineering standards that are demanded within a safety critical environment, and to ensure the continuous development of the capability of our assets to improve plant performance and availability, in order to drive our business forward.

The Role
Reporting to the Works Manager, this role will be based at our Corby Site, with the occasional requirement to travel to other UK Tata Steel sites to attend meetings and to network with peers. Within this role, your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Provide Engineering Support, knowledge, expertise and leadership to manufacturing operations to satisfy Health, Safety and Environmental Statutory and Mandatory requirements within current and evolving legislation.
- Implement an asset reliability programme, complete asset criticality studies, manage FMEA programme and lead the team to deploy the Tata Steel UK maintenance and reliability excellence model.
- Ensure that team members acquire necessary standards of process comprehension and problem solving capabilities to excel at process diagnostics and implement countermeasures to drive improvement.
We are seeking an Engineer who has previous experience of delivering Maintenance Excellence programmes for medium to heavy industry assets and who has professionally led a significant team or people with a range of experiences. The role requires competence with manufacturing KPIs including OEE and an understanding of loss analysis, and how defining and improving maintenance metrics supports operational performance. We seek an individual who sets and delivers high standards of engineering and can support the Works Manager in the delivery of business objectives.
- Determine timetables and programmes for regular planned maintenance stops, including annual and other periodic major refurbishments, and manage these programmes as required.
- Management of the overall annual maintenance and repair budget for the site and ensure that budget and resources are effectively deployed to support the business objectives.
- Drive the development of competence of the Engineering teams and ensure that effective programmes are in place for monitoring and improving performance and for the continual development of individuals as successors to key positions.
- Key within this is to establish a robust, modern and inspiring apprentice development programme, and to act as a coach and mentor to develop the team towards excellence.
- Engage in strategic discussions and forums within the business (and the wider Company as required) to ensure the development and implementation of engineering plans, practices and standards.
What we are looking for
Applicants for this role will be expected to be educated to degree level in an appropriate engineering discipline, ideally Mechanical or Electrical, and preferably with Chartered Membership or working towards, of the appropriate professional institute. You will have significant experience of engineering within a relatable industrial process medium to heavy industry site / manufacturing process or heavy industry.
- Proven experience of leading a large multi-disciplinary team of Engineers and Craft personnel (100+).
- A thorough understanding of appropriate management systems and their application, in order to drive engineering performance.
- As a member of the COLT, you will be required to liaise with a range of internal and external stakeholders on a regular basis, and therefore will need to be confident, assured and a clear communicator.
- A strong commitment to the long term business and health and safety strategies, will be capable of working under pressure and to tight deadlines, and have the flexibility to adjust to changing priorities and demands to ensure that engineering performance supports the business objectives.
