We are currently recruiting for an experienced Assistant Quarry Manager to join and lead our friendly operations team at our Tarmac Stancombe Quarry and Asphalt Plant, which is located in Bristol. The site is easily accessible from Long Ashton, Nailsea, Portbury, Portishead, Wrington, Langford, Yatton, Bristol and the surrounding areas.

Main Responsibilities
- The Assistant Quarry Manager will report directly to the Site Manager and operate at peer level with the Quarry Section Manager and Asphalt Section Manager.
- The position provides operational and technical support across both Quarry and Asphalt while holding primary responsibility for site maintenance strategy, delivery and performance.
- The Assistant Quarry Manager will manage operations with key focus on safely delivering production and maintenance goals for the site.
- Safety and operational standards are the fundamentals of the role with cost control, people management and performance improvement being key.
- Managing plant compliance with business policies and procedures and ensuring that legislative compliance is also a strong aspect of the role.
As Assistant Quarry Manager you will also be responsible for:
- Managing and overseeing the safe operation of the plant and the planned preventative maintenance of all of the site’s equipment fixed and mobile with responsibility for your own safety and that of colleagues and business partners.
- Act as the site focal point for engineering and maintenance-related statutory compliance, inspections and audits, ensuring plant and equipment always remain legally compliant and audit-ready.
- Reporting and investigating any unsafe or hazardous working practices.
- Issuing of safety briefings and toolbox talks to your operational team.
- Managing proactively both mandatory training and developmental training of your staff and keep an up-to-date training matrix.
- Ensuring appropriate Contractor and visitor inductions are carried out in line with company procedures.
- Understanding Quarry Regulations 1999 enabling a Reg 8 appointment.
- Maintaining and implementing existing and new Standard Operating Procedures, risk assessments and training your staff on the same.
Operations Support – Quarry and Asphalt
- Work in close partnership with the Quarry and Asphalt Section Managers, providing constructive challenge and operational support to drive safe, reliable and cost-effective performance.
- Deputise for Quarry or Asphalt Section Managers as required to ensure continuity of operations.
- Support production planning, dispatch coordination and operational problem-solving across both business units during periods of peak demand or resource constraint.
- Managing, coaching and developing a highly skilled, fit for purpose and extremely motivated team to ensure business continuity and reduce business risk.
- All aspects of budgetary control for all operations.
Maintenance Leadership
- Lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of the site maintenance strategy across Quarry and Asphalt.
- Own the planned preventative maintenance (PPM) schedule for all fixed and mobile plant, ensuring alignment with production priorities and shutdown planning.
- Coordinate maintenance resources across Quarry and Asphalt to maximise plant availability and utilisation.
- Challenge reactive maintenance behaviours by driving root cause analysis, reliability improvements and defect elimination.
- Manage maintenance performance through KPIs such as plant availability, downtime, maintenance cost and backlog.
- Work with procurement and engineering support functions on spares strategy, contractor performance and major repairs or capex projects.

This role is a Days role Monday to Friday, but flexibility is key to this role with the expectation to be available to meet with our plant’s operational needs.
The Ideal Candidate
To be successful in the role of Assistant Quarry Manager you will ideally have experience and knowledge of:
- Diploma in Quarry Technology/FdSc Extractives Technology.
- SHE NVQ Level 4/QCF Level 6.
- Highly experienced in Quarrying and/or Asphalt Operations including managing maintenance processes.
- IOSH/NEBOSH would be advantageous.
- Full knowledge of Risk Assessments and Safe System of Work Systems.
- Working knowledge of production processes, H&S and Environmental policies.
- Strong IT skills including a competence with SAP and the Microsoft packages – Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability to multitask and manage change.
