We are currently seeking an Apprentice Operative to join our Midlands Team at Washwood Heath site in Birmingham. Our Washwood Heath Site is a key operational location that supports manufacturing, logistics, and infrastructure activities, playing an important role in serving customers across the region.

At Tarmac, our Operatives are the heartbeat of our business-helping to manufacture the essential materials that shape roads, buildings, and infrastructure across the country. As an Apprentice Operative, you’ll be part of a team that works with purpose, pride, and precision. You’ll play a key role in producing high-quality materials and hitting our production targets — all while learning the ropes and building a career from the ground up.

Applicants must be aged 18 or over due to the shift pattern requirements. This role involves a rotating shift schedule, including both day and night shifts.

What you’ll be doing...

Your day-to-day will be varied, practical, and full of learning opportunities. Activities may include:

  • Operating production equipment such as mobile and fixed plant systems
  • Carrying out basic maintenance and inspections to keep equipment running smoothly
  • Learning to lead ready-mix operations and ensure the safety of all site personnel and visitors
  • Assisting with toolbox talks and safety briefings
  • Managing daily production tasks such as stock ordering, inspections, and defect reporting
  • Helping to manufacture high-quality material in line with technical standards
  • Contributing to operational performance and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Supporting a safe working environment and upholding our high safety standards
  • Being a role model for health and safety-looking out for yourself and your team
  • Taking pride in your work and being determined to succeed

Life on site! You will work both inside and outside, sometimes in a dusty or confined environment. However, your health and safety are our number one priority and full protective clothing is provided. Your colleagues are also there to help and look out for you, as safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Your Development

Qualification: Mineral Processing Mobile and Static Plant Operator – Level 2 Apprenticeship. You will need to travel to the National Skills and Safety Park in Macclesfield NG20 9JF. The course will be delivered in block release, so accommodation and travel expenses will be provided.
