We are currently looking for a Shipper (Readymix) to join our friendly Tarmac Birtley Regional office in Birtley, Chester-le-Street, Co Durham. As well as Chester-le-Street, this role is commutable from Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, Consett, Durham, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, Darlington, South Shields, Wallsend, Longbenton and the surrounding areas.

Main Responsibilities

  • The role of Shipper will form part of a team that are critical to the delivery of a professional distribution service to our customers, devising a schedule that accounts for the needs of the customer, optimisation of the plant network and most cost-effective use of the vehicle fleet.
  • Contribute to the success of the team by providing the best offer for our customers, enhancing their experience promoting Tarmac as the supplier of choice.
  • Effectively plan and schedule the programme of works ensuring timely delivery of orders against agreed time frames with the customers whilst optimising cost through effective truck utilisation.
  • Make educated decisions on optimum fleet numbers, transfers & requirement for hired trucks using all necessary data.
  • Manage hired haulage cost through understanding Owner Driver earnings v cost of hiring externally/transferring trucks.
  • Monitor real time progress of scheduled orders allowing you to identify potential problem areas and proactively resolve them effectively.
  • Liaison with plants to ensure raw materials are in place to meet the forecast order and delivery schedule.
  • Build and maintain good rapport and effective working relationships with other team members including plant staff, contract hauliers and customers.
  • Respond positively & confidently to our customers' enquiries, seeking support where necessary.
  • Provide customers with progress information of deliveries, in particular immediate notification of late loads.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Ability to effectively operate a varied range of IT systems.
  • Previous experience of working in a scheduling or distribution environment is preferred.
  • Background in operating distribution and or scheduling systems.
  • Proficient in use of system and demonstrate consistent, professional style and approach.
  • Awareness of sales team role and the link with distribution.
  • Understanding of out of hours agreement, truck sizes, availability and payment terms.
  • Ability to recognise and conform with nationally approved processes and best practice procedures.
  • Aware and understand individual plant capacities and capabilities.
