This multi-disciplined role plays a key part within the Barnstone operation, providing engineering expertise and support to the Production team.

The Shift Electrical / Maintenance Technician is responsible for supporting plant performance, reliability, and safety through both electrical and mechanical maintenance activities. The role operates on a shift basis, providing out-of-hours engineering support to ensure continuous plant operation.

The successful candidate will work closely with Production and Maintenance teams to minimise downtime, resolve faults efficiently, and support continuous improvement of plant performance, in line with Tarmac standards, policies, and procedures.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities

Health, Safety & Environment

  • Demonstrate strong commitment to Health, Safety and Environmental standards at all times.
  • Ensure all work is carried out in line with safe working practices, isolation procedures and site standards.
  • Maintain a good understanding of HSE requirements specific to the Cement industry.
  • Support compliance with company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Engineering & Maintenance

  • Carry out multi-skilled maintenance activities across electrical and mechanical disciplines.
  • Perform fault finding, diagnostics and repair on plant equipment to minimise downtime.
  • Maintain and support electrical systems including motors, starters, LV switchgear and control systems.
  • Work with Variable Speed Drives (e.g. ABB) and associated plant systems.
  • Support maintenance and operation of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Undertake basic mechanical maintenance tasks where required.
  • Carry out electrical isolation procedures safely and correctly.
  • Support installation, maintenance and upgrade activities in a heavy industry environment.

Systems & Continuous Improvement

  • Utilise CMMS systems (e.g. SAP PM) for maintenance planning, reporting and task management.
  • Support root cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively to improve plant reliability, performance and efficiency.

Key Competencies (Knowledge & Technical Capability)

  • Basic PLC knowledge (Siemens S7, Allen Bradley)
  • Understanding of process control and instrumentation systems (temperature, pressure, level, weighing)
  • Knowledge of cement manufacturing processes
  • Experience with servo motors and amplifiers (e.g. SEW)
  • Experience working within heavy industrial environments
  • Familiarity with control systems and automation

Qualifications, Experience, Skills & Knowledge

Qualifications

  • Time-served Electrical / Process Control Engineering craftsperson
  • 18th Edition Electrical Regulations
  • IOSH or equivalent Health & Safety qualification (preferred)
  • Abrasive Wheels training
  • Slinging & Rigging training

Experience

  • Multi-skilled maintenance experience across electrical and mechanical disciplines
  • Experience in continuous or heavy industry environments
  • Experience using CMMS systems (e.g. SAP PM)
  • Experience of plant installation and maintenance
  • Exposure to fault finding in complex plant systems

Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong electrical fault-finding capability
  • Good knowledge of motors, starters and control systems
  • Knowledge of LV switchgear and control gear systems
  • Understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • Strong IT skills and system use capability
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting ability
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to prioritise, make decisions and work under pressure

Additional Requirements

  • Mobile plant licences (e.g. Cherry Picker, Scissor Lift) desirable
  • Flexible approach to shift working and out-of-hours support
  • Willingness to undertake further training and development
