We are currently looking for a Road Surfacing Chargehand to join our North East Surfacing Team based out of the Tarmac Birtley Office in Co Durham. We have surfacing gangs in the Newcastle, Cumbria, and Tees Valley region. Therefore if you live in Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, Stanley, Durham, Sunderland, Washington, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, Darlington, South Shields, Tynemouth, Cumbria or the surrounding areas then this could be the role for you!

Main Responsibilities

  • As a working Road Surfacing Chargehand you will work closely to support the Foreman in overseeing the safe operation of the surfacing sites that the crew works on, to the highest quality standards.
  • You will support the Foreman in monitoring and overseeing the crew on site and deputise for Foreman when required.
  • Adherence to Health, Safety and Environmental regulations.
  • Involvement with start of shift briefings including the vehicle & pedestrian management plan.
  • Assist the Foreman in ensuring all sub-contractors on site are authorised, required permits are issued and plant check lists completed.
  • Assist the Foreman in ensuring all plant & equipment is inspected and maintained by the operators, is used in a safe manner in accordance with on-site rules and company procedures.
  • Liaise with the Client Representative and Site Supervisor to agree on the best way to safely undertake the works required in the absence of the Foreman, to ensure high levels of customer service and satisfaction.
  • Completion of BPO report.
  • Deputise for Foreman in their absence.

The Ideal Candidate

  • To be successful in the role of Road Surfacing Chargehand you will need to be experienced in machine lay asphalt works and have knowledge of all aspects of the surfacing operation.
  • Able to deputise for Foreman in supervising looking after operational team.
  • Have experience of operating surfacing equipment, including rollers, pavers, chipping machines, tractors.
  • Be flexible in your working approach.
  • Be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Be motivated and able to work within set timeframes and achieve agreed production targets.
  • Have good communication skills and be able to liaise with stakeholders of varying seniority levels.
  • Be compliant of Health and Safety policies and procedures and proactive in encouraging your team to do the same.
  • Basic computer / I.T. literacy.
