Reporting to the Highways Supervisor, you will work collaboratively within your team as a Highways Maintenance Skilled Operative to achieve the best possible commercial outcomes for our projects. You will also play a key role in managing any challenge processes initiated by JB Riney's clients.

Day to day responsibilities for this role will include:

  • Carrying out reactive and planned maintenance tasks such as pothole repairs, patching, kerbing, drainage works, and minor civils
  • Undertaking emergency and out-of-hours call-out work on a rota basis
  • Participating in winter service operations, including salting and snow clearance using HGV gritting vehicles
  • Operating plant and machinery including mini diggers in accordance with CPCS certification
  • Ensuring all works are carried out in accordance with relevant legislation, standards, and safety procedures
  • Setting out temporary traffic management in line with NRSWA requirements
  • Completing required documentation including risk assessments, job records, and vehicle checks
  • Maintaining good communication with supervisors, team members, and members of the public

We are seeking a skilled Highways Maintenance Operative to assist in delivering essential maintenance services across the London Borough of Waltham Forest. This practical, hands-on role includes a range of tasks such as reactive repairs, patching, winter service operations, and responding to emergency callouts.

The ideal candidate will hold:

  • A valid HGV (Category C) licence
  • A CPC Driver Qualification Card
  • A CPCS card for operating mini diggers
  • A current NRSWA Operative card

Qualifications:

  • Valid HGV licence (Category C) and Driver CPC Card
  • NRSWA Operative Card (Units including Signing, Lighting & Guarding; Excavation; and Reinstatement)
  • CPCS Card for mini digger (excavator below 10 tonnes)
  • Previous experience in highways maintenance or civil engineering works
  • Flexible and willing to participate in a standby rota for emergency and winter maintenance
  • Strong awareness of Health & Safety and safe site working practices
  • Ability to carry out physically demanding outdoor work in all weather conditions

Desirable:

  • Traffic Management (LANTRA) certification
  • First Aid at Work certificate
  • Experience working on contracts within London boroughs or other urban environments
  • Knowledge of using handheld digital recording tools or tablets

Location: The role will be based at our Leyton Depot in Walthamstow. The role is easily commutable from Wanstead, Walthamstow, Stratford, Hackney, Tottenham, North Finchley, Edmonton, Enfield, Loughton, Chigwell, Ilford, Dagenham, Cricklewood, Barnet and the surrounding areas.
