Are you a Site / Quarry Manager looking for your next role? Tarmac is recruiting an experienced Assistant Quarry Manager to lead our operations team at the Tarmac Stancombe Quarry and Asphalt Plant in Bristol. This day‑to‑day role is Monday‑to‑Friday with flexibility to meet operational needs.
Responsibilities
- Report directly to the Site Manager and work at peer level with the Quarry Section Manager and Asphalt Section Manager.
- Provide operational and technical support across both Quarry and Asphalt, holding primary responsibility for site maintenance strategy, delivery and performance.
- Safely deliver production and maintenance goals, ensuring safety, operational standards, cost control, people management and performance improvement.
- Manage plant compliance with business policies, procedures and legislative requirements.
- Act as the site focal point for engineering and maintenance‑related statutory compliance, inspections and audits, and keep plant and equipment audit‑ready.
- Report and investigate unsafe or hazardous working practices and issue safety briefings and toolbox talks.
- Manage proactive mandatory training and developmental training, maintaining a current training matrix.
- Ensure contractor and visitor inductions are carried out in line with company procedures.
- Maintain and implement standard operating procedures, risk assessments and training staff on them.
- Work with Quarry and Asphalt Section Managers to provide operational support, challenge and drive safe, reliable and cost‑effective performance.
- Deputise for section managers as required.
- Support production planning, dispatch coordination and problem‑solving during periods of peak demand.
- Coaching and developing a highly skilled, motivated team to ensure business continuity.
- All aspects of budgetary control for all operations.
- Lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of the site maintenance strategy.
- Own the planned preventative maintenance (PPM) schedule for fixed and mobile plant.
- Coordinate maintenance resources across Quarry and Asphalt to maximise plant availability and utilisation.
- Use KPIs such as plant availability, downtime, maintenance cost and backlog to manage maintenance performance.
- Work with procurement and engineering support on spares strategy, contractor performance and major repairs or capital projects.
Qualifications
- Diploma in Quarry Technology or FdSc Extractives Technology.
- SHE NVQ Level 4 or QCF Level 6.
- Highly experienced in Quarrying and/or Asphalt Operations, including managing maintenance processes.
- IOSH or NEBOSH certification advantageous.
- Full knowledge of Risk Assessments and Safe System of Work systems.
- Working knowledge of production processes, H&S and environmental policies.
- Strong IT skills, including SAP and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to multitask and manage change.
