Overview
We are looking for a summer intern with an interest in practical problem solving for AI and Robotics. The work will focus on operating robot arms and manipulators in close proximity to humans and within confined spaces. These environments present specific technical challenges, and the project will examine methods that allow the robot to operate safely and effectively. You will investigate how sensor systems can provide information for intelligent feedback loops, including AI‑based control and assess how these systems help the robot interpret its surroundings and react in a safe and predictable manner.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the delivery of the research activities as part of a team, working under the general supervision of senior colleagues.
- Conduct literature reviews, develop questionnaires, conduct surveys, collect and collate data, and undertake and record the outcomes of experiments.
- Manage and prioritise your own workload and ensure that all activities are completed to deadlines.
- Write up the results of your own research and contribute to the production of research reports and publications.
Qualifications
To be considered for the role, you will hold, or be working towards, a degree in an engineering discipline and will have sufficient breadth or depth of knowledge in AI and Robotics to perform the role. You will have knowledge of appropriate research methods, have an ability to plan and prioritise your own workload, with general supervision, and you will have an ability to work within a team environment. You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to listen, engage and persuade, and to present complex information in an accessible way to a range of audiences.
Desired Qualifications
Whilst not essential for the role, applications are welcomed from candidates with: a higher Degree in a relevant discipline, some relevant work experience, membership/working towards membership of a relevant Chartered/professional body (including the Higher Education Academy), experience of relevant student supervision and teaching activities and experience of knowledge exchange related activities.
