This is an exciting opportunity to join the frank. Pet Surgeons team in a 12-month internship based in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Our surgical intern program is aimed at motivated veterinary surgeons, who will play a key role in the management, monitoring, and treatment of our patients. This is an exciting opportunity for a recent veterinary graduate or an individual with equivalent experience to enhance their surgical skills in a dynamic and supportive environment. The selected candidate will work closely with our experienced surgical team, gaining hands-on experience in a variety of surgical procedures.

An Insight into the Internship

The schedule within the hospital will encompass a mix of theatre-based and consult-based days. Activities during these days will include:

  • Participating in surgical procedures alongside Surgeons in the operating theatre
  • Facilitating the post-surgery discharge of pets
  • Conducting re-check appointments
  • Coordinating the processing of pets through the hospital for follow-up radiographs
  • Composing referral letters

During on-call weeks, the intern will provide support to the Out-Of-Hours (OOH) staff as needed. The intern will be stationed in the hospital on Saturdays and Sundays, focusing on discharging pets and admitting emergency cases. The role will involve scrubbing into theatre for emergency cases requiring immediate attention during Out-Of-Hours periods. Hospital-based weeks will operate from Monday to Friday, spanning from 8 am to 7 pm. On-call weeks will entail availability from 7:30 pm to 8 am, Monday to Sunday, with remote duties during these hours. Additionally, the intern will be present in the hospital on Saturdays and Sundays from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm. It is essential to note that our facility does not provide emergency Out-Of-Hours services for general cases but specifically caters to our referral patients during these times.

We also encourage our surgery interns to prepare and publish scientific research and/or surgical related audit.

We have 3 Surgeons (2 Specialists), 1 Resident, 3 Surgical Interns, 15 RVNs, 5 ACAs, and 8 Support staff. As a surgical intern, you will always provide care for the patients, working on a rota with other veterinary Surgeons. In addition, you will work under the supervision of the surgeon to develop your surgical skills. The role is currently working a 3-week rota:

  • One of the weeks will be theatre based, supporting the surgeon in theatre. The hours will be 8am-7pm Monday to Friday.
  • The second week will again be based in the hospital carrying out consults. The hours will be 8am-7pm Monday to Friday.
  • The third week will be an on-call week. No commitment during the day Monday to Friday, but on call (from home) from 7pm-8am Monday to Sunday evenings. The intern will be based at the hospital Saturday and Sunday when they are on call, and this will be 7.30am-7.30pm.

What You’ll Need

  • Member of the RCVS
  • Previous experience in general practice and a rotating internship
  • Previous experience in a referral practice is preferred
  • Good English Language, both verbal and written
  • Good communication skills
