Overview

At NFU Mutual, our IT division plays a pivotal role in driving the success of our business. Our teams lead ambitious projects, such as transitioning to Cloud services, enhancing cybersecurity, and developing digital customer solutions, delivering an annual change portfolio worth over £80 million.

We are looking for an ambitious and inquisitive IT graduate eager to launch their career. Our three-year graduate programme is your gateway to becoming a future IT Architect. You’ll gain hands-on experience across diverse technical domains, develop an in-depth understanding of how our business thrives on technology, and sharpen your professional skills in real-world projects.

What you can expect

As a graduate on our IT Architecture Scheme, you’ll help design and manage the technology that powers our business. You’ll work on high-level solutions for applications, systems, and cloud-based products, ensuring everything is secure, connected, and ready for the future.

You’ll rotate through teams such as Enterprise, Technical, and Information Architecture, collaborating with Cyber & Security experts. You’ll be:

  • Designing and improving IT services such as communications, networking, and security
  • Working with colleagues across IT to understand how our technical framework supports the business
  • Helping deliver smooth, safe releases of new technology
  • Building technical knowledge, developing problem-solving skills, and contributing to reliable services for our customers

To enhance your career, you’ll work towards professional IT qualifications and certifications as you learn and progress. This programme is designed to develop you into a future IT Architect, giving you technical breadth, business insight, and professional skills to succeed.

How your role will evolve

  • Year 1 – Six-week IT Helpdesk placement, rotating through Infrastructure, Security, and Data/Integration teams, with a six-week overview of all Architecture disciplines.
  • Year 2 – Rotate through Infrastructure, Security, Systems, and Information; prepare for the TOGAF Foundation certification.
  • Year 3 – Focus on two architecture domains of your choice, developing deeper expertise.

Across all three years, you’ll contribute to transformative projects—modernising legacy systems, expanding SaaS adoption, and working with cutting-edge technologies that drive innovation across the organisation.

Your Future

We’re a collaborative, inclusive team that values curiosity, experimentation, and continuous learning. Graduates receive mentoring and coaching from senior architects, support from a graduate network, and regular development sessions. As you near the end of the scheme, a careers coach will help plan your next steps.

It’s not all about technology and certifications. You’ll also get involved in volunteering, charity, and social activities, and represent NFU Mutual at industry events. These experiences broaden your skills while giving something back.

Application Process

If shortlisted, you’ll complete an online assessment designed to measure potential for success, including your ability to learn and solve problems. Successful applicants will then complete a short video interview, followed by an in-person assessment centre with a group exercise, role-specific exercise, and skills-based interview. Assessment centres will be taking place W/C 5th January 2026.

Please note: this vacancy may close early once sufficient applications are received, so we encourage early submission.

What We\'re Looking For

To join this scheme, you need a minimum 2:2 degree (achieved or predicted) in IT, Computer Science, or a closely related technical discipline. The scheme will suit you if you have a genuine passion for IT, an awareness of architectural standards and methodologies, and an understanding of ITIL procedures as implemented by NFU Mutual or a willingness to work towards it. You should be able to build and maintain effective relationships with senior stakeholders.

Skills We’re Looking For

  • Critical thinking and problem solving – ability to analyse situations and find effective solutions.
  • Communication, collaboration and teamwork – IT Architecture is a team effort; clear communication and relationship-building are essential.

  • Growth mindset & learning agility – openness to learning and curiosity to develop quickly.
  • Innovation and creation – bringing fresh ideas to improve technology and services.
  • Technical foundations – understanding IT concepts, software, and infrastructure.

Work Experience

Some relevant experience, whether through internships, personal projects, hackathons, or university research, is desirable but not essential. What matters most is curiosity, willingness to learn, and ability to apply skills to real-world challenges.

How to prepare for a job interview at TargetJobs UK

Brush Up on Your Technical Skills

For an IT consulting role, be ready to demonstrate your technical prowess. You might face questions on systems integration, cloud technologies, or even troubleshooting specific software. If you have experience with tools like AWS, Azure, or even specific programming languages, make sure you can talk about them fluently.

Showcase Your Problem-Solving Approach

IT consulting is all about solving problems for clients. Think about how you can illustrate your approach to a past challenge using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). It's a great way to show how you tackle complex issues and come up with effective solutions.

Know the Business Impact of IT Solutions

When discussing your experiences, focus not just on the tech solutions you implemented, but also on their business impact. Employers want to see that you can connect IT with organisational goals. Prep examples that highlight how your tech contributions improved efficiency or reduced costs for past clients or projects.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

Since IT consulting often involves teamwork and client interactions, expect behavioural questions that assess your interpersonal skills. Be prepared with examples that demonstrate your adaptability, communication skills, and how you handle client feedback. Before the interview, think of situations where you worked closely with clients to create effective IT strategies or changes.
