We are looking for an intern to join our Raman spectroscopy R&D team at the Harwell Scientific Campus for a 12‑month placement. The role is embedded in a multidisciplinary team focused on developing world‑beating Raman spectrometer systems such as the Vaya Raw Material ID system.

Responsibilities

  • Design and experiment with optical systems for Raman spectroscopy, including lasers, CCDs, and spectrometer optics.
  • Build and test laboratory breadboards and prototypes in our dedicated laser labs.
  • Analyze data, visualize results, and support product design decisions.
  • Maintain detailed records, ensure laser safety compliance, and collaborate with scientists and engineers.

Qualifications

  • Current student in an applicable university course; will return to the course after the internship.
  • No prior experience required; up to 2 years of relevant experience is acceptable.
  • Strong record‑keeping, attention to detail, teamwork, and communication skills.

Desired Skills

  • Data collection, analysis and visualization.
  • Experience building and designing laser/optical breadboards and experiments.
  • Documenting research and informing application/product design decisions.
  • Optical design in Zemax.
  • Analysis using Python, R or MATLAB.
  • Knowledge of optics and Raman spectroscopy.
