Overview
SSE Thermal is responsible for the flexible generation subsidiary of SSE plc, focusing on flexible energy generation and storage assets including carbon capture and storage (CCS), hydrogen, energy‑from‑waste, energy storage and gas generation.
Mission
SSE Thermal seeks to become the leading provider of flexible thermal energy in a net‑zero world, transforming high‑carbon generation assets to low‑carbon whilst ensuring a Just Transition for our people.
Role
We are looking for students in the second year of their degree or beyond, or recent graduates, who can bring fresh ideas, new skills and creative thinking to deliver innovative solutions that help us reach net zero. During the placement you will work alongside technology experts to assess emerging low‑carbon technologies such as hydrogen production, hydrogen‑to‑power, carbon capture and storage and energy storage, and explore their applications within the power sector. You will gain experience evaluating development trends, technology maturity, commercial readiness, risks and knowledge gaps. This is an excellent opportunity to deepen your technical insight, technical report writing abilities and presentation skills while contributing to meaningful work at the forefront of the energy transition. You should be comfortable setting and working towards stretching individual targets, using your own initiative to overcome challenges, and showing a genuine interest in SSE Thermal and the prospect of building a long‑term future with us.
Qualifications
This placement is only open to candidates studying Chemical, Mechanical, Material, Environmental or Energy Engineering.
Salary and Benefits
£26,239 per annum plus a range of other benefits to support your family, finances and wellbeing. Benefits include 34 days holiday entitlement pro‑rata, a discounted gym membership and a full benefits package available on our careers site.
