The Opportunity

Are you passionate about data, curious about how analytics can drive better decision‐making, and eager to make a real impact from day one? Join ScotRail as an Analytics Graduate within our HR Directorate and help shape the future of our workforce through data‐driven insights. This is a unique opportunity to work at the heart of our business, learning from experienced professionals in HR analytics, with a key focus on information systems. You will gain hands‐on experience with tools like iTrent and Business Objects, identify emerging trends in our workforce, and support the delivery of workforce data and analytics across the organisation.

You will have the opportunity to learn and develop resource plans across other business areas, collaborating with teams in operations, engineering, and customer service to understand how data informs decisions across ScotRail.

The Person

To be considered for this role you must, as a minimum have:

  • Qualifications (a degree) at SCQF Level 9 in a numerate or analytical discipline (for example, Data Science, Business Analytics, Economics, Maths, HR with analytics focus).
  • A keen interest in maintaining and developing existing HR information systems.
  • A keen interest in maintaining and developing HR dashboards, on tools such as Power BI, to better inform data‐led decision making.
  • Naturally curious, with a keen interest in how data can solve real‐world problems.
  • Comfortable working with spreadsheets, dashboards, and reporting tools – and eager to learn more.
  • A clear communicator who can turn complex data into simple insights.
  • Collaborative, adaptable, and ready to work with stakeholders across all levels of the business.
  • Experience with Excel, Power BI, or similar tools is desirable – but not essential.

What can you expect from your graduate programme?

As part of ScotRail's two‐year graduate programme, you will benefit from structured rotations across HR, gaining exposure to real projects from day one. You will be supported by experienced professionals in HR systems, analytics and workforce planning, and have access to both internal learning platforms and external training opportunities.

Over the Two‐year Programme You Will:

  • Contribute to HR system enhancements, including testing and configuring modules in iTrent and supporting data integrity initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Workforce Planning and HRIS teams to explore how data informs strategic decisions across the business.
  • Work with teams to identify opportunities for cross‐functional analytics projects.
  • Support the development of people‐focused dashboards and reports, helping leaders understand trends in recruitment, retention, and workforce performance.
  • Engage with colleagues across the business to communicate insights, support quality improvement strategies, and refine your storytelling skills.
  • Participate in cross‐departmental analytics projects.
  • Build your leadership and stakeholder engagement skills by working on high‐impact projects and presenting findings to senior teams.

Alongside your on‐the‐job training, you will go on the ScotRail Graduate Journey where you will have a roadmap of development to support your career. When you join us, you will be given a full induction to the business, including tours of some of our locations.

Selection process

Selected candidates will be invited to a competency‐based interview. All offers are subject to passing our pre‐employment checks which include a criminal record check, medical and referencing.
