The Children's Hearing Service at NHS Lothian involves working alongside existing paediatric audiologists and assistant staff in a purpose-built Children’s Hospital in the beautiful, historic city of Edinburgh. If you are a new graduate, we can offer a strong supportive start to your paediatric audiology career, where you can consolidate your academic learning in a friendly, progressive and inclusive team.
The post holder will support the service clinically by carrying out paediatric diagnostic hearing assessments in the ENT clinic and with children over the age of 4 years. Clinical duties will include delivering high levels of care to the service’s patients via face-to-face appointments at The Royal Hospital for Children and Young People and at the Lauriston Hospital.
Service Scope
Service improvement and development are central to the vision for the forward paediatric audiology service provision at NHS Lothian. Other services that the wider team undertake include diagnostic testing of children aged 0-18 years, including ABR, ASSR, Visual Reinforcement Audiometry, Performance Audiometry, Pure Tone Audiometry, TEAOE testing, Otoscopy, and Tympanometry. We undertake the fitting of hearing aids for all ages and have an established national microtia service where we participate in the fitting of implantable devices.
Service Improvement Duties
These duties include contributions to SOPs, patient information audits, and quality improvement. A vision for quality improvement is strongly advised.
Working Hours and Conditions
The service currently runs clinics Monday to Friday between the hours of 08:00 and 18:00, with the expectation of working 37 hours between these times. There is an NHS Scotland initiative to have a reduced working week of 36 hours by 2026, with no salary impact. As from April 1, 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 to 36 hours per week. Part-time hours will be reduced pro-rata. However, there will be a corresponding increase in the hourly rate so that pay will not be affected.

This post requires the post holder to have a PVG Scheme membership/record. If the post holder is not a current PVG member for the required regulatory group (i.e., child and/or adult) then an application will need to be made to Disclosure Scotland and deemed satisfactory before they can begin in post.
