At Trade Me our vision is to be the place where Kiwi's look first.

We have a great opportunity for an Intermediate Cloud Engineer to join the Trade Me Payments team, who process around $1 billion a year. You will play an important role in maintaining and optimising a number of our applications in the Cloud. This role is also expected to look after the automated processes to maintain and monitor our large-scale, distributed and fault-tolerant applications in AWS, and pass on this knowledge to the other members of the Payments team.

You'll have the best time working at Trade Me, and this is why:

  • Flexible: Flexible working is the new normal. We have our company connection day on Monday and there is another team connection day as well. We support you with a home office setup and a utilities allowance to ensure you can work comfortably.
  • Wellness: Being your best self means caring for your physical and mental wellbeing; we offer lots of resources to help you along the way.
  • Leave: We support you with leave when you need it, including 5 days of wellness leave each year and 10 days of sick leave from day 1.
  • Social: Nothing beats getting together to have some fun and celebrate our success. Join us in the office on payday for company-paid lunches, Friday drinks and nibbles every fortnight, annual Trade Me company awards, celebrations, and more.
  • Learning: Whether it's on the job, formal training, mentoring, or something else, you'll grow with us from Day 1.

Here's what you can expect in this role:

  • Be curious and enthusiastic about trying new things, challenge the status quo, but with a pragmatic approach.
  • Be an agent of change, capable, and excited to embrace new solutions and technology to transform yourself, your team, and Trade Me.
  • Collaborate with product managers, development teams, and other stakeholders to deliver awesome reliable products that deliver great customer experiences.
  • Be the primary technical contact on projects, from requirements gathering through to design and implementation.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of security considerations of cloud computing: including data breaches, broken authentication, hacking, account compromising, malicious insiders, third parties, advanced persistent threats, data loss, and DoS attacks; with a particular focus on PCI compatibility.
  • Perform a wide range of operational activities: measuring & monitoring systems, planning capacity, responding to incidents, ensuring the root causes of outages are addressed, understanding what tends to go wrong, and preventing it in the future.
  • Proactively identify & recommend improvements to address systemic pain points and technical debts.
  • Maintain an effective knowledge base and runbooks to bring faster resolution to production issues.
  • Evaluate new technologies and tools and provide data-driven recommendations.
  • Participate in the strategy and direction for our technology and processes.
  • Maintain compliance with, and promotion of, Trade Me's code of conduct, ethics, and standards.

What we're looking for from you is:

  • A tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field of study is preferred.
  • 3+ years experience in managing public cloud web platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure, etc.), preferably in AWS.
  • Experience with containerisation technologies (Docker etc.).
  • Networking Skills: VPCs, Security Groups, DNS, DHCP, IP, Firewall, Switching, Routing, Load-Balancing, etc.
  • Experience with an Agile way of working.
  • Experience with 'infrastructure as code' and automation, using tools like Terraform, Ansible, SaltStack, Chef, Puppet, etc.
  • Exposure to Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) is an advantage.
  • Experience with PHP is an advantage.
  • PCI compliance experience is an advantage.
  • Problem-solving - An eye for detail; willing to work through the little things to make our cloud systems faster, more reliable, and easier to maintain.
  • Communication - collaborates and communicates well with others; a good team player with a positive attitude and a willingness to collaborate.
  • Proactivity - Highly proactive with a keen focus on improving uptime and availability of our mission-critical systems.
  • Quality - A focus on delivering quality but the clear ability to balance that against the speed of execution or current constraints.
