Key Responsibilities

  • The post is intended to be a concierge/ buddy service. A go-between from resident and management.
  • A listening ear to pass on any concerns or queries. Attending to any needs or issues that might arise on a day-to-day basis.
  • The Lifestyle Assistant needs to get to know each resident and their needs. To ensure residents settle into Tanglewood happily and have a positive experience and enjoyable time with us.
  • Moving to a care home is a big step and we want to make it as smooth and happy as possible.
  • Making residents feel at home and welcome, the Lifestyle Assistant plays a key role in supporting that transition.
  • Ensure their own personal space feels as homely as residents want it to be.
  • Be aware of residents’ birthdays – inform the kitchen and the entertainments team (log in diary).
  • Introduce yourself, find out about the resident, their hobbies, interests and personalities. Get to know them and become friends. Introduce yourself to their family members/ friends, obtain contact details so you can keep touch on behalf of the resident.
  • Ensure your residents are comfortable and liaise as necessary with housekeeping/ maintenance/care team leaders/ catering/ hairdressing/ chiropody and activities etc.
  • Ensure residents are aware of the activities programme. Ensure they are able to attend any activity they might wish to attend. Make sure they get a weekly activity sheet and a monthly newsletter.
  • Help with correspondence/ banking/ shopping/ post office/ library/ booking a table at a restaurant/ keeping in touch with family/ e-mailing/ phoning etc.
  • Liaise by e-mail/ phone with family members. Alert family members to matters of interest in the home (e-mail photos etc.). Liaise regarding birthdays etc. See if you can help with any family requests.
  • Contact relations prior to a birthday and see if there is anything they would like you to do etc.
  • Facilitate personal shopping trips for residents – to buy clothing etc., trips to bank and post office. Offer to take residents out for coffee, walks around town whatever seems appropriate to each individual.
  • Get to know your residents so you are able to offer a ‘listening ear’ should you feel that necessary.
  • Spend one-to-one time, e.g. looking at photo albums, general chatting, reading, and talking. Use the lifestyle budget – occasionally just to brighten someone’s day (small bunch of flowers if they have been down etc., a coffee or ice cream while out etc.)
  • Spend time getting to know residents’ families. Build up a relationship with them so they know they can talk to you in confidence or ask you to arrange any special treat.
  • Plan trips which might be appropriate and organise transport, venues etc.
  • Encourage residents to socialise together. Perhaps arrange a tea party/ coffee morning.
  • Identify specific personal activities; discuss with the Activities Co-Ordinator. Liaise with the activities team and if you feel the residents would like a specific activity that is not available on the programme, arrange it yourself.
  • Assist residents at certain activities (clothing sales etc. or fayres and help them with their personal allowance and spending, ensuring receipts are forwarded to Home Administrator.
  • Accompany residents into town (either by car or on foot).
  • Actively market Tanglewood and promote a positive personal and professional attitude within the local community, ensuring the good reputation of the home.
  • Adapt and create an atmosphere that suits individual residents and their needs.
  • Maintain a record of how you have assisted individual residents.
  • Attend funerals as necessary.
