Are you an experienced Cost Engineer with a good knowledge of metal fabrication? Our client, a leading manufacturer specialising in bespoke engineered solutions, is seeking a highly skilled Cost Engineer to join their growing team and play a key role in evaluating project requirements, interpreting complex engineering drawings, and generating precise costings and proposals. Working closely with clients, production teams, and suppliers, the successful candidate will ensure all tenders are technically sound, commercially competitive, and aligned with manufacturing capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret fabrication, assembly, and GA drawings.
  • Identify materials, weld symbols, tolerances, and key technical requirements.
  • Calculate material usage and estimate fabrication, welding and machining process times.
  • Source supplier/subcontractor pricing and confirm realistic lead times.
  • Prepare clear, accurate quotations and tender documents.
  • Liaise with clients, production teams, and suppliers to clarify details and validate assumptions.
  • Maintain accurate costing records and support continuous improvement of estimating tools.

Essential Skills

  • Experience in manufacturing estimating or cost engineering.
  • Ability to read mechanical/fabrication drawings.
  • Knowledge of metal fabrication processes (cutting, folding, welding, machining).
  • Excellent analytical and numerical ability.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Confident communicator with strong attention to detail.

Desirable Skills

  • Understanding of steel, stainless steel, and aluminium pricing.
  • Familiarity with BS EN 1090 and external processes (galvanising, powder coating, machining).
  • Familiarity with CAD software for drawing interrogation.
