I'm currently supporting a well-known consumer products business in their search for a Lead Firmware Engineer to join a growing team developing next-generation connected and electrified products. This is a rare opportunity to step into a genuinely hands-on leadership role where you'll have ownership of embedded software architecture, technical direction and team development, whilst remaining close to the technology and the code.

The team is small, highly collaborative and engineering-led, making this an ideal position for someone who enjoys solving complex technical problems whilst helping others grow.

The role will involve:

  • Leading a team of Embedded Engineers and acting as the technical authority for firmware development
  • Owning software architecture decisions across a complex embedded product ecosystem
  • Remaining hands-on with embedded C/C++ development, code reviews and technical problem-solving
  • Working closely with hardware, electronics, simulation and systems engineering teams
  • Driving engineering best practice, product quality and technical innovation
  • Supporting the development of future product features and R&D initiatives

We're particularly interested in engineers who have:

  • Strong embedded C/C++ experience
  • A background in low-level embedded systems and firmware development
  • Experience working closely with hardware and electronics teams
  • Previous leadership, mentoring or technical team ownership experience
  • The ability to balance hands-on engineering with strategic technical decision-making
  • Experience in safety-conscious product environments such as automotive, industrial, machinery, consumer electronics, robotics or similar

Why consider it?

  • Salary from £75,000 - c£85,000
  • Hybrid working (3 days onsite) ideally, maybe some flex
  • Flexible working hours including a 9-day fortnight option
  • Opportunity to influence the direction of future products from an early stage
  • Small team, high impact environment

This role would suit an existing Lead Engineer, Principal Engineer or Senior Embedded Engineer looking to take ownership of architecture, technical strategy and team leadership without stepping away from engineering.

How to prepare for a job interview at Talentedge

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Talentedge uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
