The SPT I is responsible for general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. This position requires a data entry background. Functions performed may include but are not limited to A-station, presort, pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation and aliquoting. All functions must be performed with confidence, accuracy and in a timely manner.
The role requires good organisation skills and the ability to learn and understand specimen types related to tests ordered by clients. The SPT I must be able to learn and understand the compliance regulations related to test ordering, which may change daily. This position is critical to quality and customer satisfaction. Because changes occur frequently, flexibility is essential. The SPT I will be exposed to diverse demands from customers.
Majority of SPT I work is on the night shift, but based on staffing needs, weekends, holidays, on-call and overtime may be required. The department operates in a production environment with emphasis on productivity and quality standards and departmental completion times. The position requires a data background with the ability to enter 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour. Work is performed in a biohazard environment; practice good safety habits. The role may require sitting or standing for long periods. Effective communication with all levels of staff is essential. Adherence to core values, safety and compliance policies and procedures is expected. Maintains a neat and clean work area. Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills to foster a positive environment. Demonstrates flexibility and the ability to adapt to change.
Education: HS diploma or equivalent.
Required Knowledge: Basic understanding of computers with a preferred knowledge of laboratory testing and/or laboratory specimen processing.
Work Experience: No experience required but previous laboratory experience preferred. Medical background preferred, including medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory. Previous hospital laboratory experience is a plus but not required. Previous experience in a production environment preferred.
