Talent STEM have been retained by a COMAH regulated manufacturing business in Cheshire to appoint a Project Engineer for a hands-on, site-based project delivery role. This position is suited to an engineer who enjoys being on site, close to the plant and actively involved in the day-to-day execution of projects. You will take ownership of delivery from concept through to commissioning, working directly with contractors, operations and EHS teams to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently and compliantly.
Role
You will lead and support multidisciplinary engineering projects across process improvements, capacity enhancement, compliance works and infrastructure upgrades. Projects are delivered in live operational environments and require strong practical engineering judgement alongside structured project management.
Key responsibilities
- Taking ownership of projects on site, coordinating activities and resolving issues in real time
- Managing EPC and EPCM projects across mechanical, electrical, chemical process and civil disciplines
- Developing and controlling project scope, schedules, budgets and resources
- Working side by side with contractors during construction, installation and commissioning
- Leading risk assessments and ensuring safety and compliance are embedded in delivery
- Driving stage gate governance without losing focus on practical execution
- Supporting commissioning, handover and safe integration into operations
- Maintaining accurate, high quality project documentation
This is a true boots on the ground role, not a desk-based project coordination position.
About you
You will be an experienced Project Engineer who is comfortable operating in a COMAH or high hazard environment and confident making decisions on site.
Key requirements
- At least 5 years' experience delivering engineering projects in COMAH or high hazard sites
- Degree qualified in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics or Chemical Engineering
- Broad working knowledge across mechanical, electrical, chemical process and civil engineering disciplines, with the ability to coordinate and challenge design and site activities
- Strong practical project delivery skills across planning, cost control and risk management
- Good working knowledge of process safety and hazard studies such as HAZOP, LOPA and ALARP
- Experience working directly with contractors in live operational environments
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership is advantageous
