Head of Projects – Facilities Management
Location: Dartford
Salary: Up to £85,000 + benefits
A leading facilities management provider is looking to appoint an experienced and commercially astute Head of Projects to take full ownership of its projects division, based from the Dartford head office. This is a senior leadership role with responsibility for running the department end-to-end, managing budgets, developing people, and delivering high-value M&E projects across a diverse client portfolio.
This role would suit a strong operational leader with a solid technical grounding—ideally from a mechanical pipefitting background—who is comfortable balancing hands-on project oversight with strategic, commercial and people management responsibilities.
The Role
As Head of Projects, you will lead the Projects department, overseeing all aspects of delivery, commercial performance, and team development. You will be accountable for departmental budgets, P&L, and forecasting, while driving standards, efficiency, and growth across the function.
Key Responsibilities
- Take full responsibility for running the Projects department, including strategy, structure, performance and growth
- Lead, manage and develop the Projects team, providing clear direction, coaching and support
- Manage departmental budgets, P&L, forecasting and financial controls, ensuring strong commercial performance
- Oversee recruitment, appraisals, performance management, training and ongoing staff development
- Ensure projects are delivered on time, to specification, within budget and to client satisfaction
- Drive margin protection, cost control and effective commercial risk management
- Manage and maintain strong relationships with key clients, supporting repeat business and new opportunities
- Oversee multiple contracts and project portfolios simultaneously
- Manage subcontractors and suppliers, ensuring compliance with QSHE, contractual and safety requirements
- Plan and allocate resources to ensure teams are competent, trained and appropriately resourced
- Support tendering activity, bids and the identification of new project opportunities
- Ensure high standards of professional correspondence, reporting and project documentation
Skills & Experience
- Strong background in facilities management, building services or M&E projects
- Mechanical pipefitting background highly desirable
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a senior projects leadership role delivering M&E projects (£100k–£1.5m)
- Proven experience managing teams, subcontractors and multiple client contracts
- Demonstrable responsibility for budgets, P&L and departmental financial performance
- Strong knowledge of health & safety, QSHE and compliance standards
- Experience in recruiting, training and developing technical and project staff
- Excellent communication, leadership and organisational skills
- Relevant technical qualification (mechanical, electrical or HVAC) preferred
