What You’ll Be Doing

  • Manage your own caseload of fixed-costs matters, primarily involving RTA and personal injury claims
  • Negotiate legal costs with opposing parties to achieve appropriate settlements
  • Assess the reasonableness, recoverability and validity of costs under the CPR, fixed-costs rules and relevant case law
  • Handle costs across Fast Track, Intermediate Track and MOJ claims
  • Provide costs support and advice to fee earners and colleagues
  • Monitor deadlines, claim lifecycles and negotiation targets
  • Develop appropriate negotiation strategies for individual claims
  • Work closely with the Department Manager and wider legal team
  • Maintain accurate case records using Proclaim or a similar case-management system
  • Contribute to improving costs processes, procedures and best practice

What You’ll Need

  • Experience as a Fixed Costs Negotiator, Costs Negotiator or in a similar legal costs role
  • Experience negotiating fixed legal costs, preferably within RTA or personal injury litigation
  • Good understanding of the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) and fixed-costs tables
  • Knowledge of costs principles, relevant case law, legislation and costs recovery
  • Experience managing your own caseload and negotiating directly with opponents
  • Strong analytical, negotiation, communication and organisational skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with fee earners and the wider team

Experience with Fast Track, Intermediate Track and/or MOJ claims is highly desirable. Experience with Proclaim or another legal case-management system would also be advantageous.
