About the Role
We are looking for a Tax Associate to join our growing tax operations team. Reporting to the Tax Operations Manager, you will support the delivery of personal tax and Self Assessment services for sole traders, self-employed individuals, and landlords. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to develop their tax career within a modern, digital-first tax service ahead of Making Tax Digital (MTD) for ITSA.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and submit Self Assessment tax returns (SA100) for sole traders, self-employed individuals, and landlords
- Prepare partnership returns (SA800) and supporting schedules
- Handle tax computations for mixed income sources including employment, dividends, rental income, CIS, and foreign income
- Support Capital Gains Tax calculations and disclosures
- Respond to HMRC correspondence including PAYE queries, compliance requests, and penalty appeals
- Liaise with clients to obtain and verify financial records (P60s, P45s, dividend vouchers, CIS statements, rental schedules)
- Maintain accurate records and workflow trackers to ensure deadlines are met
- Support senior team members with ad hoc tax queries and projects
- Assist with MTD for ITSA readiness as the service scales
Person Specification:
- 2-4 years experience in UK personal tax or Self Assessment within a practice environment
- Working knowledge of tax software (TaxCalc, CCH, IRIS, or similar)
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy under pressure
- Good communication skills, confident liaising with clients and HMRC
- Organised with the ability to manage multiple deadlines
- ATT part-qualified or actively studying (or ACCA equivalent)
- Experience with rental accounts, CGT, or CIS
- Familiarity with MTD for ITSA
- Exposure to cloud accounting software (Xero, QuickBooks)
