Our client, a leading Civil Engineering and Infrastructure specialist, is seeking a Senior Design Engineer to join their team on major infrastructure and utility projects in London.
Responsibilities of Senior Design Engineer:
- Lead and oversee the design and verification of temporary and permanent civil engineering works, including calculations, drawings, risk assessments, and design certification.
- Develop preliminary design solutions and coordinate design activities with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Manage independent design reviews and secure third-party technical approvals where required.
- Ensure all design outputs comply with CDM regulations, health and safety requirements, and environmental standards.
- Provide technical guidance and engineering support to project teams and operational activities.
- Develop and evaluate value-engineered solutions to improve efficiency, constructability, and cost-effectiveness.
- Review complex construction methodologies and method statements, ensuring technical suitability and compliance.
- Assess defects, technical issues, and compensation events, recommending practical and effective engineering solutions.
- Support the approval and management of external suppliers and specialist consultants.
- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of technical design procedures, standards, and best practices.
- Provide technical and commercial input to estimating and tendering activities, including pricing support where required.
- Liaise with clients, contractors, suppliers, and third parties to support successful project delivery.
- Promote engineering excellence, knowledge sharing, and best practices across the business while supporting client relationships and business development activities.
Required Experience for Senior Design Engineer:
- Previous experience within the structural engineering field, experience in the detailed design of structures either permanent or temporary works including the use of frame analysis software, structural design software and the use of CAD software for design purposes and sketches.
- Ability to carry out calculations by hand or in software such as MathCAD.
- Working knowledge of relevant industry specifications (Eurocodes, BS 5975 and other BS standards for structural design still used in the industry).
- Experience in a structural engineering office carrying out design calculations, analysis and developing or following structural methodology and overseeing other team members.
- Degree, or equivalent, in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering.
- Thorough knowledge of structural principles.
- Knowledge of construction processes, methods, etc.
- Ensure designs meet performance, safety, quality and cost requirements.
- Good team worker and able to coach others, but also able to exercise own judgement and work independently and manage own time and tasks.
- Effective communicator and able to assert own view.
- Ability to identify structural suitability, critical load cases.
Desirable:
- A mix of site and design office experience.
- Incorporated or Chartered membership, or equivalent, with a relevant professional institution (or en route to achieving such a qualification).
- CSCS card.
