The Principal Engineer will provide senior technical leadership for a complex mainframe modernisation programme characterised by a large case load, high throughput, and significant scalability and resilience requirements. The role is accountable for shaping and assuring solution design, enforcing engineering standards, and guiding delivery teams operating in a high-governance public sector environment.
This role combines deep hands-on technical expertise with strategic oversight, ensuring modern cloud-native platforms are delivered securely, reliably, and in line with government architectural, engineering, and assurance expectations. As the programme scales, the role may extend to multi-team and multi-vendor technical oversight.
Essential Skills and Experience- Demonstrable experience as a Principal Engineer on large-scale modernisation or platform programmes.
- Strong background in cloud-native engineering on AWS, including Kubernetes-based platforms.
- Deep hands-on experience with Java, Spring Boot, and Node.js, building scalable and resilient backend services.
- Experience modernising or integrating with mainframe or legacy enterprise systems in high-volume environments.
- Proven ability to enforce engineering standards and operate effectively within high-governance, regulated, or public sector contexts.
- Strong understanding of Agile delivery, DevOps practices, CI/CD, and engineering lifecycle management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce and assure high-quality technical documentation.
Rate: £550.00 - £600.00 / day
